Seeing one thousand signatures on this petition reminds me of just how much those Friday night lights mean to all of us. This hometown tradition is worth fighting for and I am humbled to see so many neighbors join me in keeping our name.

Seeing these names stack up reminds me of why I grew up cheering for the Raiders under those Friday night lights. We are nearly at one hundred signatures and hitting that mark will prove to the school board that we refuse to let our traditions fade away. Stop this madness! Keep this innocent tradition of our legendary mascot at Rutland High School! My grandfather was a full blooded Algonquian Indian it would be more of an insult to remove the arrowhead and change RHS mascot than to keep the legend going. RUTLAND RAIDERS forever!
As an RHS alumnus, the Raider is a warrior, one who is brave and one that our competitors should be intimidated by. That is what a high school mascot should be, and that is what a mascot should represent. There is nothing offensive about bravery.
I am in full support of keeping the Rutland Raider name and logo as a school and community identity Lori Barrett MSJ ‘85; mom of Cherokee decedents and proud Rutland Raiders, Catherine ‘14 and Sarah ‘15
If there had been direct objection by local native Americans, it might be worth discussing...but a knee-jerk response to national group “demands” is a form of cowardice. An issue of the city should be decided by the people of the city, —-approval by national groups not needed
I don't live there anymore, but just some food for thought - what if they kept the name "Raiders" but changed the logo from that of an arrow-head to something more of a Roman Raider theme - like that of the Oakland Raiders logo? Just a concession.
