There is a movement seeking to remove the beloved Rebel Man as the mascot of South Spencer. This iconic symbol is part of the history of Spencer County Indiana and the long-standing rivalry between Heritage Hills and South Spencer. It would be a shame to remove him when he stands for that rivalry. There has never been a racial tone to this mascot nor hate. It is the identity of the south half of Spencer County and should remain as such.

Our mascot had the "Johney Reb" flag and a rifle (1974) these are long gone. Now you want to earse the man......., Aren't the people that want him gone "rebels" ? Save the Rebel man.
The Rebel man is a symbol of pride in our school; he is a fictional character and is intended to be the opposite of our country rival, since the consolidation of two schools Richland and Rockport. Please do not infer more.
As the first openly gay guy to go through SSHS I can say this isn't about racism ir hate. It was a symbol of pride in ourselfs, and gave us all a reason to not give up ( in sports and the like) so that everyone would know that the Rebels were the best. Long live Rebel Man
I am a Heritag Hills alumni. I grew up seeing this fella and never once thought it was racist. Just knew when I saw this our school rival was in town. Don't take away part of Spencer Counties or SSHS history. Leave him alone.
Both my children went to South Spencer. The Rebel man has already been stripped of his flag and musket. Leave him alone. Majority rules doesn’t matter anymore. One person can change everything just because they don’t like it.
Leave it alone he's just a mascot

I say keep it. My hubby graduated from South Spencer & so did my son. The Rebel man never made them dislike/hate any person of color. It's all part of history. South Spencer history. People need to get a life & quit whining......
