Jason Kolkema is seeking support for a medical marijuana growing facility (to rent to a third party) and dispensary per new bills signed by Gov. Snyder that allow expansion of facility types, and assign licensing schemes to them similar to liquor licensing. There was a lot of discussion on education of the bills, moral impacts, village infrastructure and perception of our community. Of note, this facility is proposed to be located at 135 Third Street (the main street) in the village. This location is just over 1400 feet from the high school. It is proposed to be the first of its kind pending further legislation, which would potentially draw from the entire area.

Our group has formed to present opposition to this ordinance request. We feel the proposed location would present negative effects to the current residents.

1. Increased traffic flow

2. Environmental impacts (smells, fertilizer toxins, etc.)

3. Property values decrease.

In thinking further into the future if the ballot proposal in 2018 passes Michigan will legalize marijuana for recreational use. If this happens this facility can be easily converted into a "Pot Shop". The impacts of this would be.

1. Heavily increased traffic flow

2. Increased crime

3. Increased vagrancy/panhandling

4. Easy access to sell to school children

While this group is no opposed to a dispensary in Fruitport Township we believe it would better serve the community in a more business and less residential area.

We ask that only residents of the Village of Fruitport and Fruitport Township over the age of 18 sign this petition.

For validation purposes we ask that you put under the comments section if you are a village or township resident.

Updates

May 28, 2017

The massive surge of support proves that Fruitport residents refuse to let Jason Kolkema turn our main street into his personal cash cow. We have reached a point where the local officials can no longer pretend this dangerous plan is what our community wants.

As a homeowner in the Village of Fruitport, I believe that the Village not allow this type of operation within the Village. I would think that there would be ordinances in place to, at a minimum, not allow this type of operation within at least 1,000 feet from any school, church, or publicly owed facility.

I'm very concerned for our Village , if this happens, it's too close to our schools.

I'm not necessarily against the use of medical marijuana, I just feel a better location, maybe on Harvey St. would be better.

Absolutely not in fruitport, look at what these types if facilities bring with them. People move and stay in fruitport to avoid these types of facilities

I am a Fruitport Township resident, teacher, and parent. I am primarily concerned about the location, as well as the other reasons presented in the petition.

Please immediately impose a moratorium on medical marijuana growing facilities and dispensary businesses. I am a township resident and I do not want this in the village. In addition to the reasons listed in the petition I feel this proposal will negatively impact the outside perception of our schools which will have a direct impact on enrollment growth. The .75% tax that the Village will be entitled to on gross sales of this proposed dispensary are not significant and may not even cover the increased costs a business like this will cost the village. The tax revenue amounts to $7,500 on a million dollars of sales. Please write an ordinance similar to the one the township already has to essentially prohibit business like this from our community. Thank you!
