The changes that have been put in place for the up coming 2014-2015 school year for the Extended Day program are unfair to parents and children. It is no longer first come first serve; it is now a "random" drawing from the school board member(s) of who gets accepted into Extended Day. What happens if parents can't find alternative after school care that is as affordable as the Extended Day Program, if they don't make the "random" drawing? What happens if one sibling gets "picked" and one does not? The parents will be forced to either quit hard to find employment, or reduce hours to accommodate the children who are not picked in their "random" drawings.

This change was NOT discussed with parents. There are no written policies on the Extended Day program. This change was also NOT VOTED ON at any school board meeting; it was a private meeting between school board members.

If you agree that this is completely unfair, and it is going to put many financial hardships on your family, please sign this Petition to have the school board establish written policies, and to stop this from happening until parents can be notified of "possible" changes, and allowed to voice their concerns!

Updates

April 15, 2014

I really never thought this would blow up like this but look at us now. It is wild to think that a few parents just talking on the playground about these secret meetings turned into all of this noise because honestly I was just hoping someone would listen. Someone actually reached out from the news which is completely terrifying but also maybe exactly what we needed to get some real answers about these random drawings.

We moved here from Flagler County and they accept every child who applies, as far as I know. I never had trouble getting my child in to their extended day program. I don't understand why Volusia County isn't the same. The fees are the same. Why the difference?

I don't understand how the School Board thinks the full time working parent or teacher can pick up there child at 2:05 or earlier. What are we suppose to do?

This will also affect some Childrens ability to participate in after school programs, such as sports and tutoring, if they have to go to After School off campus. It should be first come, first serve.

This is ridiculous if your children has been attending this program for years and now to all of a sudden change to random drawings makes no sense! Who voted on this, and how come it is implemented without a discussion first!

It is completely unfair to those who need this after school program to pay 40 a week compared to 100 or more at local day cares. It's always been first cone first serve and it should stay that way!

Having a "lottery" will not ensure a safe, reliable place for their children if not selected. This could force parents to leave their children unattended after school in order to provide them housing.

This is absurd. It should be first come first serve as it has always been. I

If families are put through separation of children or a parent's employment is put in jeopardy, how will that benefit anyone? Once again, children first??? Hmmm .. Food for thought.
