Concerned parents of children attending PS 169 Queens, The Bay Terrace School, have been informed that the after school program provided by Commonpoint Queens will be utilizing a “lottery” system to choose program participants and will not be offering a paid option for families who do not receive a spot. This places an enormous burden on working families who have no alternative care arrangements. As full time working parents, we completely depend on this program.
We, the undersigned, are concerned parents who urge administrators and leaders to act now to ensure a fair approach to program recruitment and access to the program for families in need. We ask that access be prioritized for and available to working parents who wish to have their children participate in the afterschool program.

I have requested a formal meeting with the school administration to discuss why the current lottery system fails to account for the needs of working families. My focus is now on drafting a proposal for a hybrid enrollment model that prioritizes parents who require reliable childcare. Further updates will follow once I have received a confirmed response from the district office.

Please allow the option for parents to pay for afterschool if their child is not picked for the lottery! Thank you!
What are we supposed to do if we work full time and don't win the lottery? This is so stressful for families who rely on the school day schedule. Please bring back the paid spots.
Firstly, the program is wonderful and important to the community. Please offer a paid option as you have in the past. The annual lottery is putting a large annual stress on parents. A paid option is a reasonable request for continuity of support while considering the budget of the programming.
Have PAY option for afterschool. We are full time working parents and need the afterschool care for our kids.
Commonpoint runs a great program and it's important for all of our families to have access to it.

I was fortunate and thankful for the spot that my son was able to have in this after school program. By offering paid spots more parents can have the benefit of having their children in school while working. Please consider this petition.
