I've lived on Portland Ave for close to ten years now and have seen countless accidents on this road and multiple fatalities. The most recent accident on Portland Ave. claimed the life of an incredible 21 year old who had a blindingly bright future. This isn't the first fatal accident on this road and hauntingly enough both fatalities occurred in the same location. Along with the two fatalities we've had someone careen into our all brick apartment sign and total a neighbor's car that was parked on the side of the road, and at the end of Portland Ave where it connects with Old Bainbridge Rd. there was another fatality that involved a Comcast truck and a motorcyclist.
My wife and I have complained to TPD about this road and the dangers it poses to pedestrians, cyclist and the drivers themselves. It is too easy to speed down this road that has a deceptively sharp curve that has proved it's danger on multiple occasions; enough lives have been lost and enough people have been hurt.
I'm petitioning for traffic calming to be installed on Portland Ave through the 1900 block. I believe that traffic calming will reduce accidents on this road, possibly for good. I'm starting this petition because every time I look at the location of the last accident I ask myself could a life have been saved had we had traffic calming on this road.
This last accident was very emotional for me. I was with this young man at the car for his last moments. I went to the candlelight vigil, and saw the heartache, turmoil and devastation that will follow the family and friends of Markeal Dickey for years. Praying that people will use this tragedy as a wake up call, that excessive speeding is dangerous not just to the one driving, but to others.
