Decision Makers: Virginia Department of Transportation

Hi Neighbors!
A child was struck on Port Conway today in an area previously brought to VDOT’s attention to no avail. Please consider taking 30 seconds to sign this petition by entering your email address to verify you’re a human-  then clicking the link in your email to confirm you signed it.

Please sign and pass this along if you support petitioning VDOT to decrease the speed limit to make the Hopyard stretch of Port Conway safer through the use of speed humps, rumble strips, and flashing warning lights.

OUR CHILDREN ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE CASUALTIES: DEMAND IMMEDIATE VDOT TRAFFIC CALMING & SAFETY STUDY AT PORT CONWAY/HOPYARD

Today, the tragedy we all feared finally happened: a child was struck by a vehicle in our community.

We demand that VDOT (Fredericksburg District) and County Officials immediately:

Conduct a priority VDOT Traffic & Pedestrian Safety Study and expedite the resolution. This CAN’T wait until the next fiscal year.

Lower the speed limit along this residential corridor, which was established prior to our development being built.

Implement physical traffic calming, including speed enforcement, warning signs, lights, and rumble strips before the crest of the hill and speed humps near the entrances.

VDOT has been unresponsive to multiple traffic study requests from community members!
Many concerned citizens have submitted traffic study requests warning VDOT about the extreme hazards surrounding the Kings Highway and Port Conway intersection. VDOT has repeatedly ignored us, and now a child has been hurt, and there are many community members affected and traumatized.

______________________________________
 Hazards we face:
1.) Excessive Speeds: Port Conway’s 55 mph speed limit is routinely ignored, with heavy dump trucks and commercial traffic barreling through at 55–70+ mph and running the Kings Highway light.
2.) Zero Driver Reaction Time: A steep blind hill leaves drivers with virtually no time to brake for turning vehicles or pedestrians.

3.)Steps from a Park: This dangerous corridor sits right next to a park where children play, are forced to CROSS the road there WITHOUT a cross walk or any signals, leaving young drivers and families exposed to severe blind spots.

I agree 100% that something needs to change on Port Conway. So many awful accidents my kids and I have witnessed and we have only lived here for two years. Not only from big trucks speeding through to bypass Kings Hwy on their way to 301, but excessive speeds and unsafe visibility restrictions due to curves and hills. We need help here. Thanks for your consideration — off Emerald Drive.

Because the amount of accidents doesn’t seem to be enough to make a change

Because the situation has changed and it needs to be reconsidered.
