My name is Harriet. I am a 19 year old resident of Keyworth. In the early hours of Sunday 6th May, myself and two friends were assaulted in our village. Due to Nottingham County Council's decision to save money and energy by switching off street lights during the night in certain places, I could describe nothing about the assault to the Police as it was pitch black. I could not see the attackers, or the vehicle they arrived in. I could not even see what they were doing to my friend whilst I was screaming for help.

I am starting this petition, alongside a written one, in the hope that the Council will reinstate our street lights. Whilst I understand budgets are important, what is more important than residents' safety? We are all vulnerable, whether it be whilst walking home from a late bus, or when we are asleep - unaware of thieves and vandals assessing our property from the safety of the dark.

I know that since the Council decided to switch off the lights it has been a contentious issue across the affected areas. I myself complained many times to family and friends that I felt unsafe, even when returning home with a torch - however I never wrote a letter to the Council as I said I would. I urge you to sign my petition and voice your opinion, because whilst my friends and I weren't badly harmed, the worrying issue is what could happen to somebody else in the future, if nothing is changed.
