By signing this petition I call upon Powys County Council to halt the nonsensical proposal to turn off 67% (2 out of 3) of the counties streetlights and honour there aim in improving the quality of life for those that live in Powys. Powys County Council has an estimated 14,006 street lighting columns and proposes to pull the fuse on an estimated 7,500 street lighting columns in the defined non-core areas of the County. This whole proposal is driven by the fact that although Powys County Council agreed to find a £50,000 saving in street lighting energy costâs through the introduction of part night lighting (12.00 Midnight â 05.30AM) the Council is now faced with increased energy costs of 36% (£175,000) for street lighting meaning a total saving of £225,000 needs to be found Powys County Council has a net budget of £223m for 2008/09 and £47.7m (21%) is collected from Council Tax paid by the residents of Powys and we ask that the £225,000 that needs to be saved is done in another way with out the reduction of street lighting. http://www.powys.gov.uk/uploads/media/Council_Tax_Leaflet_en.pdf
