We, the undersigned, strongly object to the removal of the street light in Newnham Croft Street opposite the entrance to Derby Stores.
Derby Stores of 26 Derby Street, CB3 9JE, is a well-established post office and popular convenience store. It has long opening hours, often in the dark, yet the only street light which illuminated this section of the road has been removed. The pavements on both sides of Newnham Croft Street are narrow and slope. It is essential that they are well lit, so that the public using this busy street – particularly the elderly, children and those with pushchairs – are not at risk of tripping or being knocked down by passing bicycles and cars. The store has suffered two armed raids; removing the only street light which illuminated its entrance leaves it vulnerable to further attacks.
For the safety of the customers and staff of Derby Stores and the residents of Newnham please reinstate this light.

The response from our neighborhood shows that everyone recognizes how dangerous this dark street has become. Now it is time to turn this energy into action by emailing your local city councillor today to demand the light be returned.

I have had both legs amputated below the knee and travel around Newnham on my little scooter. Derby Street I stay away from as much as possible because of the severity of the slope on the pavements and the number of parked cars whose owners think half the pavement belongs to them as well as the road. This forces me onto the road and if there is to be no street light I will have to stay away from the area for the winter months. Yet another example of how little consideration is paid to people with any mobility handicap.
The difficultly in executing on such a wide ranging decision is that key neighbourhood areas get caught up and this is just such a case. This streetlight illuminates a key local amenity for elderly residents and parents with young children in buggies who already have to navigate the Croft's pavement parked cars. In this instance the County Council could and should reconsider and reinstate the street light.
Given the vital nature of Derby Stores to the local community, it is important that people are not prevented from accessing it and its viability as a community service are not compromised by poor lighting and consequent safety issues
Please reinstate this essential street light so that the risk of accidents on this well-used narrow street is reduced.
The replacement of street lighting has been badly managed with no proactive consultation with local residents.
Please bring back the light
Derby Stores provides an essential community service, with newspapers, groceries and the post office. Many of its customers are elderly or mums with pushchairs. A street light is essential for the comfort and safety of customers. and passers-by.

Even if there is some case for reducing street lighting in appropriate places, surely this cannot be one of them. This post-office store is essential to the community and the adjacent pavements are difficult enough to negotiate safely even when lit. Please reconsider.
