Labour-controlled North Tyneside Council has voted to increase Councillor allowances by 24%, at the same time that it is laying off 350 local people and cutting local services. The Unison Union, local Conservative and Lib Dem Councillors and residents have spoken out against this decision.

Please sign the petition so that we can try and put a stop to this.

I have been reading through the messages from local residents who feel abandoned by this decision. It is infuriating to watch the council prioritize these pay hikes while our neighbors lose their livelihoods.

Seeing this level of support confirms that our community is rightfully furious about these pay hikes while our neighbors lose their jobs. This momentum proves that the council cannot simply ignore the people they are supposed to represent.

i work for the council and have not had a rise for many years, have had my hours cut, my job is constantly under threat and friends made redundant. It is ludicrous that they can give themselves such a rise in the current climate

My son is disabled and had his budget slashed by North Tyneside council. I have had to fight tooth no nail over the last six months and this is happening to all the disabled young people in North Tyneside. Then they give themselves a pat on the back. All our respite has been closed as well.

There are far too many projects in the region which deserve this funding more than the councillors. A 24% rise is unrealistic and not in line with the inflation rate of our economy, especially when NHS workers cannot even get a 1% rise.

This is shameful , most especially when redundancy after redundancy is taking place. People are expected to do jobs that were previously done by several people, this inevitably results in services not being as efficient. How on earth can this be justified?

i have signed this petition because of all the cuts around the area where I live. If they can't afford to maintain our towns they can't afford to pay themselves more money.

Being a councillor is about wanting to help the people. I stood for council three times and wasn't elected and when I first stood I didn't even realise you got paid. The money didn't interest me in the slightest. It's about doing what you can for residents.
