Rent control refers to laws or ordinances that set price controls on the renting of residential housing. It functions as a price ceiling. Rent control exists in approximately 40 countries around the world. Rent control laws vary from one country to another, and may vary from one jurisdiction to another within some countries Rent control should be a necessity by the State of California or all cities to protect the public and to prevent landlords from imposing rent increases that cause key workers or vulnerable people to leave an area. Maintaining a supply of affordable housing is believed to be essential to sustaining the local society. Homeowners who support rent control point to the neighborhood instability caused by high or frequent rent increases and the effect on schools, youth groups, and community organizations when tenants move more frequently.

I spent the afternoon reading through your stories about the rent hikes forcing people out of the homes they have lived in for years. It is heartbreaking to see how many of our neighbors are struggling just to keep a roof over their heads while the costs keep climbing. My own family is feeling the exact same pressure and that is why I am pushing this forward every single day.

Seeing this momentum grow reminds me of the neighbors I saw packed up on the sidewalk last month because they could no longer afford their own front doors. This surge in support proves that our community refuses to watch our friends get pushed out of the homes they helped build.

I am teacher in Long Beach for 20 years. I need rent control before all rents are over 3,000 for a studio!

Just say NO to rent control. It will cost you more in the long run and puts small owners out of business and prevents improving the property. Please research the studies. Most studies conclude it hurts everyone in the long run.

Another problem is the population increase, lack of housing, and real estate rising costs. If you saved your money and bought a small investment building at current market value, you will have to make the business work so you don't go broke. Again, rent control punishes all of the small and medium owners who have worked years to finally get a return on their building. One reason for the rising costs is that the ASSESSOR raises property tax on investment buildings every year. The local cities raise fees every year. Insurance gets raised every year. This whole concept is punitive to individual owners who have to eat costs.

Long time needed, especially with the new wave of development happening in Long Beach. Don't want it to turn into what happened in SF, Oakland, and LA.

Our rent was increased more than 10%. We cannot afford to buy a house. This is why we rent. We should have rent control.

Rents have gone up to rediculous amounts in Long Beach in the last 6 years I've lived here. Landlords can raise rent every year yet those same renters probably aren't getting cost of living raises and making pennies as it is and it's got to stop. There has to be some balance between the median income to cost of living. The people who typically rent are not in jobs that can support the housing costs. Inflated rental costs equals the homeless rate increasing, need for government assistance increasing, health insurance increasing, debt and taxes increasing. Stop the madness, sign and pass it on!
