Protect Oakland Tenants Now! Rent Increases Up To 120% Are Displacing Residents
Oakland rents are skyrocketing, with increases up to 120% in the past year. Oakland had the 2nd highest San Francisco/Bay Area and 3rd highest national rent increases in 2014.
The last 32 years of rental development is not protected by Oakland rent control. This leaves thousands of existing tenants vulnerable to new fees and unreasonable rent increases up to 120%.
We the people of Oakland, California are asking Mayor Schaaf and the Oakland City Council to:
(1) Encourage landlords to refrain from reducing non-optional services and forcing tenants to buy them back in the form of added fees.
(2) Encourage landlords to be reasonable and fair when proposing rent increases. Increasing existing tenant rents by 50% to 120% is essentially a forced eviction for many.
(3) Require landlords to provide relocation fees in situations where rent increases in short time frames are displacing tenants with little time to save money and move.
(4) Expand protections for tenants not covered by rent control. There are a variety of different ways that the city can advocate for unprotected tenants.
(5) Take a strong stand as a city to reform or overturn Costa-Hawkins at the state-level, so that Oakland (and other California cities) can freely pursue rent control relief without the interference of the state.
We are proud to support growth in our community, and believe
pro-growth does not have to be anti-tenant. Mayor Schaaf, please honor your
campaign promise to preserve affordability so Oakland residents don’t get
displaced.

The growth of this petition has captured the attention of local journalists who are now requesting interviews regarding the displacement crisis. I am currently finalizing a formal briefing document to present to the City Council during our scheduled meeting next week.

I am currently experiencing this as of March 30th. i feel alone in this battle: Encourage landlords to be reasonable and fair when proposing rent increases. Increasing existing tenant rents by 50% to 120% is essentially a forced eviction for many.
I work with youth who are homeless in Oakland. Even with rents and house prices at current levels, emerging adults don't earn enough at their entry level jobs to be able to afford housing in neighborhoods where they grew up and now work. And housing costs continue to increase with no end in sight. It is well past time for our City Council to act to prevent outrageous greed from driving out emerging adults and the rest of us who aren't part of the 1%.
I'm disabled on SSDI, I'm paying 1040 for a studio. The owner treated a unit for bed bugs and never told the tenants so they traveled to my unit. I can't afford to move ANYWHERE because I don't make 3 times the rent... We need help
The same thing is happening to me @ The Grand, located @ 100 Grand Ave. Move here in 2009 when the building first opened. It was 1,700.00 but every year my rent has gone up 10%. Totally out rageous an something has to be Done!!.
I am signing this petition as a fairly new resident of Oakland, who in less than 2 years of living in this wonderful has already faced an illegal rent increase from unscrupulous landlords and been forced to move in consequence. I support this and similar efforts to stop illegal and egregious rent increases.

Mayor Schaaf- I sign this petition to implore you to listen to the people who elected you and keep your promise to maintain affordable housing in Oakland. If you continue to allow these privatized developments (on public land, especially) to continue to happen with little or no regard for existing Oaklanders of all economic statuses, you will be leaving a irreparably damaging legacy and will contribute to the demise of Oakland's incredible diversity.
