Please consider signing and/or sharing this petition if you are in favor of continued remote learning for the Spring 2022 semester for Graduate School/Mental Health Counseling classes due to the current peak in the COVID pandemic.

Updates

January 11, 2022

I have been reading through the comments you all left and I am truly humbled by the shared experiences and concerns for our collective well-being. Please know that I am working to figure out the best way to present these thoughts to the administration so your concerns are properly acknowledged.

January 11, 2022

I am honestly overwhelmed by the momentum this has gained over the past few days. This surge of support is entirely because of your dedication to our shared goal rather than anything I did on my own.

I would prefer a hybrid model of remote learning for the first 4-5 weeks, switching to in-person learning when this peak calms down. I am an advocate for in-person learning, but want us all to feel safe in our learning environment during these trying times. Thank you.

I am very concerned with the high transmission rate for Covid at this time. With the efficacy of the vaccine greatly reduced with this variant, it is extremely risky to be holding in-person class. With the inevitable quarantines throughout the semester, and the needs of our our schoolmates with medical conditions (that put them at grave risk if infected with Covid), we need accommodations for those who cannot attend class in person. I feel strongly the safest, most accessible option is to hold class remotely until the surge of Omicron cases has gone down to a more reasonable level.

I just feel bad as I work in a child care setting and I am exposed to Covid frequently ( 3x this month) and I will then be potentially exposing all of the people in my classes

This is a pandemic and until this is more under control I do not feel comfortable being exposed to all these different individuals when class can be online for the health and safety of all students. I have elderly and immunocompromised people in my immediate family. I do not feel as though I should have to choose between visiting my family or furthering my education during this pandemic.

The infection rate in CT is almost 25%. WCSU has had us remote this entire time, even when the infection rate was as low as 2%. It does not make sense to have us go back in person right now; especially considering the fact that our cohort has been able to successfully participate in all of our classes and acquire the knowledge necessary to be successful in this field.

The email sent by President Dr. Clark suggested "learning opportunities that best support our students", and as educators (school counseling) we know, learning in a mask is hard. The operation plan presents as a deterrent in my educational experience, where my thoughts are on exposure above all. Many other distractions and challenges arise in this especially difficult time if having to be in-person.

As graduate students, the majority of us are professionals who work another job on top of taking classes in the evenings. We are exposed to many different individuals and environments, which then puts us at risk of exposing others and/or contracting the virus. While some may not have a choice of whether or not to come into work, we do have a choice of whether to come in person to class. Please do not place us in the position of having to make this difficult choice. We have successfully operated online for the past year when the number of cases was significantly lower than they are now, and the majority of us prefer this for the Spring semester or at the very least for a few weeks until the numbers go down. A graduate program should take into consideration student voice not only because we are the individuals investing in this program, but more importantly because the health and safety of our community is paramount.
