Dear Administration,
This petition is to bring attention to a few pressing concerns that have been raised in regards to returning back to school this semester. According to the CDC, California is the third highest infected state, with 54, 937 reported cases of Covid-19 and a total of 2, 254 deaths as of May 5th. While I understand that Governor Newsome is implementing Phase 2 of reopening the economy, I am not confident that returning back at this time is in the best interest for the health of the faculty, student body, and patients treated at Yo San.
From the current information and data, we know the carriers of the virus can be asymptomatic, we don’t know if the antibodies for those who have contracted the virus can prevent them from getting it again, nor much about the mutations as so little is known about this virus in general. Simply adding additional classes to reduce class size or human interaction is not a sufficient response.
Mitigating exposure is the safest and surest way to protect our community, thus online courses should continue, or at least be an option for all students who are concerned with returning to in-person classes. Furthermore, we should be in compliance with LAUSD , which is currently closed until further notice.
Being that we are an institution where health and wellness is a priority and of the utmost importance, not treating this with more severity seems not only negligent, but contrary to what we stand for.

I would also like to add that there are currently some students in quarantine out-of-state. Going back to attend classes in-person will put many Yo San students and faculty at risk if these students become infected with coronavirus while out-of-state, in-flight or at the airports while coming back to California. And if they self-isolate upon arrival, then they'll be missing out on 14 days of classes if the online format is no longer available. With all of these factors at play, it is obvious that it's too premature to start in-person classes.
In light of the large class sizes and simultaneous reduction in classroom & facility space I do not find it appropriate to resume in person classes for purely academic classes. It seems an unnecessary risk. Furthermore multiple classes are scheduled to split, yet no splitting schedule has been set & communicated. I would strongly encourage a continuation of online classes to mentain the current set schedule since it’s hardly fair to change schedules after classes are paid for and 1/3 accomplished which could result in students not being able to continue a class. Thank you.
LA County currently has the opening of schools in Stage 3 (which Yo San will follow), but Yo San needs to file their application for accreditation for online learning to have online classes for the "non-hands on" classes after they are open. This can be a lengthy process so they should file it right away. Once schools are allowed to open, there will be many students on campus for the hands on classes, but we don't want to add extra students from the non-hands on classes that would cause extra exposure, along with the new tenants that will rent the space on the 3rd floor, and patients that are using the same stairs/elevator.
I think it's a good idea to have online classes as an option, and/or at least keeping the classes that could be split to continue online so that there are as little disruptions to our schedules as possible. And as Aman said, in the case of exposure and needing to quarantine it will be helpful as well so classes do not have to be missed.
I agree that online classes should be an option for students because it might be difficult to change our schedules but the opening of the clinic for interns should occur as soon as possible to avoid holding us back. In my opinion it should not be treated equally.
Since we are in the wave of online classes--it makes sense to continue or have as an option. For many people, changing schedules for larger class sizes may prompt hardships to schedule that are enrolled in the class. Or if exposure does occur to someone, one may need to quarantine for weeks at a time and miss large chunk of classes.
I know there are more complexities behind the scenes to be able to continue classes online but it would be great to only come in for practical classes - it helps with the social distancing regulations.

there is no way i want to go back to school, my mom has diabetes and had cancer in the past. I make her life in danger
