We are calling for the full hourly train service to be restored on the Crewe - Stoke - Derby line at the earliest opportunity. The failure to restore the full service, despite earlier assurances that the depleted timetable was a temporary Covid measure, is causing inconvenience, anger and loss of passenger footfall along the line. The withdrawal of the following peak time trains is especially frustrating:

  • 06.45 departure from Derby;
  • 08.10 departure from Crewe in the morning;
  • 16.45 from Derby at travel-to-home time (with an inadequate replacement bus service).

IMPORTANT UPDATE FROM EAST MIDLANDS RAILWAY, AUGUST 2023:

WE ARE DELIGHTED TO ANNOUNCE THAT THESE PEAK SERVICES WILL BE REINSTATED, ON WEEK DAYS ONLY, FROM 10 DECEMBER 2023 . HOWEVER, THIS CAMPAIGN WILL CONTINUE IN ORDER TO PUT PRESSURE ON DFT TO BRING BACK THE REMAINING TWO MISSING TRAINS EVERY DAY AND SIX MISSING TRAINS ON A SATURDAY.

N Staffs Community Rail Partnership wishes to support East Midlands Railway with their aspiration to fully reinstate the hourly service.

By comparison, we note that the much more sparsely populated Derwent Valley line currently enjoys 18 services in each direction/day (reinstated May 2023) compared to just 14 services/day between Stoke and Derby – two major North Midlands population centres.

The affected intermediate stations are: Tutbury & Hatton, Uttoxeter, Blythe Bridge, Longton, Kidsgrove and Alsager.

Updates

July 29, 2023

East Midlands Railway thinks giving us these weekday scraps is enough to make us go away. They are wrong because we still have massive gaps in service that leave our communities stranded. I am not stopping until every single train is back on the tracks.

July 29, 2023

The momentum behind this push proves that our communities refuse to be treated as an afterthought by the Department for Transport. These bureaucrats tried to bury our transit links but they underestimated how quickly this region would fight back to get every single train restored.

I have been asking EMR for the 13.10 from Crewe Saturday service to be reinstated for 2 years now. They are losing out on approx 100 Derby County supporters who used to catch this train from Uttoxeter and Tutbury & Hatton for every home game. It used to arrive into Derby just before 14.30 which was ideal to get to the ground before kick off

I have 2 staff from Uttoxeter who have to either leave early an hour before we close or wait 2 hours after we finish to get home as at 5pm train which I thought rush hour to be a peak time to run was cancelled. Same in the mornings when everyone is trying to get to work.

I went to Stoke o Trent sixth form college. Hundreds of teenagers use that train to get to school. This only makes the traffic worse. This is such a vital line for all demographics!

For many years, I regularly used the 1145 departure from Derby to Crewe and also the 1807 departure from Crewe to Derby. Their withdrawal has been a great inconvenience to me. I hope they will be reinstated at the earliest opportunity.

Given that GB Railways HQ is to be based in Derby and Crewe was a shortlisted location, surely there should be a regular direct train service to join up these two locations and the locations in between the two? There also needs to be a regular service between Crewe and Stoke-on-Trent to reduce the amount of traffic on the A500 in peak times

I am a Station Adopter at Uttoxeter Station and am strongly aware of the importance of an hourly service for local people. Once people use cars or buses for these journeys they do not return easily to using the train.
