I, the undersigned hereby respond in opposition to the notice of an organized movement to change the name of South Shore International College Prep to Willie T. Barrow.

South Shore International College Prep High School follows in the legacy of what was once an academic and athletic powerhouse producing such great alumni as the discoverer of the structure of DNA, the founder of the second largest software development and manufacturing company in the world and the head coach of four consecutive National Football League AFC championship teams, just to name a few. Its name represents a large community of proud alumni and supporters.

As a community member, supporter and/or alumni, I oppose such a change and encourage the local school council not to change the name of South Shore International College Prep to Willie T. Barrow.

For additional information contact: Terry Hardy, President - South Shore High School Alumni Association, Inc., [email protected], 773-220-2602

LISTEN AND SHARE: This is from the December 15, 2015 LSC Name Change Committee meeting.

Seeing the outpouring of pride for our school roots reminds me why we have to protect this legacy. The momentum behind our fight shows just how many of us refuse to let our history be erased.

One hundred of us have already stepped up to protect the history of our school. Seeing this level of support for the South Shore legacy proves that our community is not ready to let our name be erased.

I grew up in South Shore; went to SSHS and see the HS as a monument in the area. I am still grieving the name change for my grammar school. The same school Michelle Obama went to, Bryn Mawr! Do not destroy the dchool"s rich history. Blue and Green.

I'm totally opposed to changing the name of my alma mater. The school has extensive history along with the fact that it represents an entire community which is South Shore neighborhood. Build a school and name that one after the highly respected Willie Barrows.

while Rev. Willie T Barrow is a GREAT iconic civil rights leader the school should be named for our GREAT community!!! Perhaps the auditoriums, laboratories or other public spaces inside the school can be named for MANY of our civil rights GREATS???

I would hope that the name would remain South Shore International College Prep. That would maintain continuity with the graduates of South Shore High School which opened in 1940 and remained the backbone of the community until the wonderful new high school building was constructed.

I strongly object to changing the name of my alma-mater. The city of Chicago has a long history of maintaining historical entities. My alma-mater, South Shore HS, is a historical entity on the southeast side of Chicago (aka. South Shore area). -Dr. Wright

Please leave the name as it stands. It reflects the neighborhood and the people who reside in South Shore. To change the name takes away from the value of preserving ones home and neighborhood. This neighborhood, like no other, belongs to the residents of South Shore, past and present.
