As it is the governments wish to swallow up our green and pleasant land with housing and then claim that to bring the infrastructure up to the same level, to service the increased community size, is unaffordable, then we will not get anything other than a completely useless public transport service. As a disabled person, I cannot walk to the bus service, from Lion Park, so the train station is my best option, until you look at the timetable and see just one stopping train in every hour, how pathetic, getting back home is even worse. We need a bigger station, with facilities, to serve the increased community size and trains that stop. Wake up Government, Chichester Planning and Southern Railway.
The other thing is when the children used the train we ended up driving to pick them up from other stations further long the line - otherwise they ended up waiting for hours to get home. Not good especially in the winter
Firstly here are the facts: 1. There are 3 or 4 trains an hour to Southbourne/Emsworth during the day. These trains are on the same line as the Fishbourne/Bosham/Nutbourne. 2. There is a lot of building going on with new homes on the Fishbourne, Bosham & Nutbourne line. In fact over 100 houses have been built directly behind Nutbourne station alone in the last couple of years - a mix of private/housing association. 3. We must support the vulnerable in these "villages" who may not have the funds or be able to drive. 4. Also this line is for people working in the local surrounding areas including Chichester, Portsmouth & Brighton. To assume that people only use the train to London Victoria is not correct. 5. It assumes everyone works a standard 9-5 day. I'm self-employed and need to travel outside these hours. So "limited capacity" is not an argument nor is the "peak hours" scenario.
We, the West Sussex Rail Users Association, have negotiated with Southern an improved services for Nutbourne, Bosham and Fishbourne on Mondays to Fridays and there are now generally two trains an hour in each direction in the peak hours from 06.00 to 09.00 and from 15.00 to 22.00. These include three direct trains to London Victoria in each direction. Outside those hours and on Saturdays and Sundays.there is an hourly service and usage of these trains from all three stations is low. The service provided by Southern is stipulated by the Department for Transport and cannot be varied unless Southern can show it to be at least cost neutral. Outside the peak it would be very difficult to justify more than an hourly service on current and historic usage. Having said this, we are already talking to Southern about improvements to services along the West Coastway and we cover the points raised here in our discussions. The rail line & the train companies IE Southern Railway are working on a goverment contract to provide a service to set rates per day. The track has only a limited capacity per hour. In addition your proposal would require 50% more trains to provide the increase service- there are just not many spare trains available in the UK. Its evident in Fishbourne that many people over 65 yrs old use their bus pass & do not travel by train despite the poor service.
Trying to promote 'green' travel it's pointless having a 'service' that is so inefficient! People will look for effective alternatives - which usually means driving their car!!
I totally agree. Whenever we go by train we always end up driving to either Havant or Chichester to get a more regular service!

50% more trains would not be required because there are plenty of trains that pass through the stations throughout the day, stopping at Southbourne and then going straight to Chichester. If just one of these trains each hour could stop at these stations, it would be so much more convenient to local residents, at the small cost of just a few minutes added to those existing journeys. No extra trains are actually required.
