We petition Tulsa Public Schools to keep the Robert E. Lee Elementary School name the same. Do not change. Tulsans desire historical correctness, not political correctness.

Updates

August 15, 2017

The emails I receive from the school board remain cold and unresponsive. It is exhausting to fight for a legacy that they seem determined to erase but I am not walking away from this.

Where will it stop? George Washington was also a slave owner. Will we next change the name of our nations capitol? History must be preserved (both the bad and the good) otherwise, we may repeat it.

Our country is listening to the few and not the many. The ones wanting to re-name know nothing of Gen. Lee and his many accomplishments before civil war. He was torn between the US and his State (Virginia). Times were very different back then. Before you start condemning at least know the facts.

Maple Ridge currently checking the HP status of Lee, we have long considered it part of our historical neighborhood and Lee School was included on one of our Tours, showcasing its historical significance. History cannot be rewritten, by changing the name of all the schools, streets or neighborhoods in America. This is wrong!

Should we rename Georgia because of King George of England? This is an over-reaction.

Leave the name alone. Good grief, he's a person out of our history. We don't have to agree with the Confederacy to admit that Robert E. Lee was one of the greatest generals in U.S. history. After the war, he did all he could to help bring the Union back together. He even became the president of of the college named after George Washington. Let's stop refighting the War Between the States.

Lee was an important historical figure who served his country honorably in the Mexican war before commanding the Confederate forces during the civil war. He personally opposed slavery and was a major player in both both social and racial reconciliation after the war. Removing his name does a disservice to history itself. This politically correct lunacy must end. Let it end here and now.

Robert E Lee was a man of higher character than most of the, so called, leaders today. Why should we condemn him while we DO NOT condemn the likes of Hollywood stars, Congressmen and Congresswoman who spit on our flag and our Country? Why should we try to re-write history because it feels good? Re-writing history to make it more politically correct does not change it, it just hides the truth from our children and all who follow is. It is just WRONG!
