The climate crisis is accelerating. In Australia, most of the country is gripped by crippling drought. Last summer was the hottest ever, and last winter was one of the driest on record.
We have increasingly devastating floods and bushfires. Human health is being impacted as is precious biodiversity.
The UN gives the people of the world 11 years to radically slash greenhouse gas emissions for any hope of avoiding the most catastrophic impacts of global warming – that includes us!
50 Councils and one government (Aust. Capital Territory) around Australia have already declared a Climate Emergency (e.g. Surf Coast, Ballarat, Darebin, Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, etc.)
We need urgent ACTION from our leaders proportionate to the emergency at hand to restore a safe and healthy planet. Please support this petition - on behalf of all of us and generations to come!
We the undersigned therefore petition the Colac Otway Shire Council to:- acknowledge that we are in a state of climate emergency that requires urgent action by all levels of government, including by local councils.
- commit to a target of 100% renewable energy for council operations by 2025.
- commit to a target of net zero carbon emissions for the community by 2030 .

Any thinking person knows that the 5 billion (and growing) humans on this planet are strangling it to death. Every one (and particularly those charged with civic responsibilities) must do all that they can to correct (NOT INCREASE) the damage already done. Climate action. There isnt a choice.
Knowing how much dedication was applied by this council to protect a lovely handful of heritage trees against bats I just know they will have the power to put a good and effective plan in place to help save all our trees and those that live by them. Thank you in advance
I am imploring you to protect t he future for my grand children and all other inhabitants of this planet and declare a CLIMATE EMERGENCY ...you have the power to influence other councils ..please use it .
The Otways are such a precious part of Victoria. We need to do everything possible to acknowledge the threat, name it and set about mitigating the damage.
I live in Apollo bay where the ocean is washing away the beach and very soon the road, this is a climate crisis issue! Stop dragging the chain and step up to the plate colac Otway shire!
We are in a climate emergency.
I believe the science. I love my children. I love the earth. It is our moral responsibility.

As an early years teacher I see how involved and passionate children are when provided with opportunities to learn about their world. Environmental education starts at a very young age and is a strong focus in my teaching. We need to act now for the healthy future of our children and make sure they have opportunities that we were afforded.
