Baltimore City should open pools for swimming.

Pool exercise is an important way to maintain a healthy lifestyle and a healthy immune system. Aquatic exercise can improve mental activity and metabolic health. Swimming also has an advantage over other exercise because of the presence of chlorine.

“There is no evidence that the virus that causes COVID-19 can be spread to people through the water in pools, hot tubs, spas or water play areas," according to the CDC's website. "Proper operation and maintenance (including disinfection with chlorine and bromine) of these facilities should inactivate the virus in the water.”

This is an activity conducted in a medium - chlorinated water - which eliminates the virus.

Baltimore has a rich history of swimming because of its many rivers, lakes, and seaside resorts. Learning to swim is an important life skill. As the State of Maryland has opened pools at now 50% capacity this week, we believe Baltimore City should follow suit considering the City needs to encourage this life skill and exercise.

One thousand people have signed this now. It has been a long and draining road to get this kind of attention for our local pools. I am exhausted by the constant silence from the city but your support keeps me going.

The path to one thousand signatures has been exhausting but we need to break through this barrier to be taken seriously. Please send the link to three people in your life right now so we can finally force a conversation at the city level.

The path forward has been grueling and slow. We are nearing a hundred signatures which is a benchmark that carries real weight. I need you to put this in front of someone new so we can finally crest this hill.

Please open the pool. Meadowbrook is huge and there is plenty of room for social distancing. People will follow guidelines. It does not make sense that people can get tattoo and go to protests but can’t swim laps. Pools are open in the county just 5 minutes away!

I am a lifeguard at a pool in the city. We are completely ready to open up in a safe and cautious manner and we are willing and able to comply to any guidelines set by the government to keep everyone safe. Swimming is a great form of exercise that cannot be done unless pools are open.

As I already noted to the Mayor's office in a separate letter, lap swimming is particularly suited to social distancing. Plus, in the "crawl" stroke widely used among lap swimmers, we are face-down in the water while exhaling, and only pull our faces out of the water to *inhale.*

It is so important for the health of young and old people to get back into shape after hibernating this spring. Please open the pools across Baltimore City so we don't spend another day denying our muscles an opportunity to regain strength and endurance. Thank you for your attention!

Pools are an important summer recreation opportunity for kids out of school, giving them a chance to learn a survival skill. Outdoor pools give space for social distancing and the chlorine kills germs. Please open city pools!

I am a physician, and pools contain chlorine which kill the coronavirus. Pools are much safer than any business or store because of this. Please open the pools so people can exercise and stay fit to prevent coronavirus infection. Thank you.
