The artistic community of Memphis, Tennessee is coming together to unite against venues, promoters, and event organizers using artificial intelligence (hereinafter “AI”) to promote shows and events. Please join our call to action and sign this Petition to tell individuals and venues that the artists of Memphis DESERVE and DEMAND only human-generated promotional materials for shows and events that give credit to those beautiful, artistic minds of the creators!
AI is detrimental to artists because the use of AI diminishes the importance of original creative expression. Further, generative AI uses the artwork of human artists without consent, credit, or compensation. Memphis artists are worthy of praise and recognition for their painstaking efforts that go into creating original pieces of art.
We, the undersigned artists in Memphis, call on venues, promoters, and event spaces to make a difference by refusing to use promotional artwork generated by AI or other non-human sources. It is necessary to maintain the integrity of human-driven creative expression and give the Memphis artist community the credit and compensation they deserve.
Join us in the fight against AI shortcuts for artwork and keep creative pursuits human-driven!
AI is a danger to human art, thriving, and life. Beyond its aesthetic shallowness and ugliness, it is a threat to millions of workers living under capitalists that poison whole communities and support dehumanization. AI is not worth the human cost. Ban AI, ban billionaires. Support artists and creators/makers of all kinds. As Wendell Berry says, “ I’d happily kill a computer before I let a computer kill my community.” -awc

AI is no substitute for the creativity and talent of a human being. And speaking of humans, do you like clean air and water? AI consumes exorbitant amounts of energy and water to produce its poor imitation of an artist’s work. Some AI data centers (cough Elon Musk cough) spew particulate pollution at alarming levels. Human and environmental health are being impacted every time AI hallucinates something for your project. Save the Earth, pay an artist!

I'm an artist, I'm a creative director, I'm a real human being. Keep AI out of the art community in Memphis. This community is strong and vibrant, let's celebrate the artists, the crafters, the creators, the makers.

The use of AI is an absolute garbage move. Anyone that uses it is lazy, dismisses the creativity of human artists, and puts a stain on anything they are trying to promote. Pay people! Stop using valuable resources to create trash.
