On behalf of myself and others who have signed this petition, I am writing this piece to explain our concerns involving Generative AI usage; and make known our desire to prohibit a blanket endorsement of AI Generative Model such as Open AI, anthropic, mid journey, and others.

We reject this endorsement on the basis of ethical concerns; and our option that AI cannot do our job better, or teach us better than our professors can.

As put succinctly by John Warners in More than Words–“Generative AI is founded on the use of unauthorized intellectual property…a foundation of exploited labor…and is very, very bad for the environment."

It infringes our property; the works of master artisan and novice artist alike, scraping without regard for our consent.

We the students reject this visual plagiarism, and feel a kinship with our fellow artists such as Sarah Anderson in her case Anderson v. Stability or our peers, talented writers in cases such as Bartz v. Anthropic, among many others.

And as Karen Hao deeply explores in her book “Empire of AI", Data centers guzzle our water; dominate land, and divest huge amounts of energy and resources from the communities they infiltrate.

We the students reject this exorbitant waste of resources, and pollution of our environment.

It is these ethical concerns which mobilized the Hartford Art school students to organize and respond so strongly.

While we respect individual autonomy and right to use Gen Ai in personal practice; We loudly reject the push to embrace it as an inevitability.

There is an impression that many have that AI can do what they struggle to, can create what they cannot create.

But we the Hartford Art Students stand firm in our conviction that we honor our processes; our efforts; our learning; and our art. AI cannot create what we do; because we have not yet created it.

As a Uhart alum I am disappointed that our school would encourage generative AI. The joy of creating is experienced through CREATING. Not having a computer spit out an image or idea that was trained on the original ideas of artists WITHOUT THEIR CONSENT. End gen AI. Keep it out of the art school.

AI damages crucial evaluation and conclusion skills necessary for world literacy. In application to the arts, AI images completely invalidate reality and tell us that our career pursuit is meaningless.

I’m an alumni. By endorsing the use of generative AI within the art school, UHART is reinforcing the idea that their students are fundamentally replaceable. Art is for the people and by the people. Not only does AI steal from existing art out there, but it strips the creativity, life, and meaning out of the work that artists work so hard and diligently to create. We spend years in the program to learn the fundamentals. AI rips what already exists to amalgamate lifeless images in seconds.

Generative A.I. promotes laziness and the neglect of skill, patience, and pride in one’s ability. It has no place in learning and no place in the arts.

The study of art is the study to express one's inner humanity. To be vulnerable, and put your thoughts and emotions to canvas regardless of the perceived quality. As such, the use of generative AI in an Art School- or any school setting for that matter- is inherently flawed. It removes the creativity, emotion and human thought. Furthermore, as a HAS alumni, I can safely say that if I were paying thousands of dollars to learn the fundamentals of art I would immediately pursue a different college.

As a recent UHart/HAS alum it’s very disheartening to see HAS feel comfortable to instill AI in the curriculum. It already feels like such a hard sell to get other schools within the University to partner with us. The tuition and resources we pay for did not teach us to feel comfortable to substitute the joys of the creative process with a machine to do it for us. I want better for HAS and for the future students that come through our halls.

AI does not belong in an educational environment, this is crucial to us and the following generations of students and artists.
