Every afternoon, at the intersection of 1st Ave. and California St., students are crossing the street with fears of being hit by cars. Many drivers ignore the Stop sign or the school staff who volunteer for traffic duties.
The traffic at that intersection is heavy with parents' cars,the school buses, the after-school center shuttles and the students crossing the street to their rides or after-school centers (First Avenue Education & STEPS Academy).
Without the approval from the Arcadia School District and the City of Arcadia, the volunteers directing traffic are not allowed to wear safety vests or to carry Stop signs.
Due to increasing crime rates and the already stretched police force in Arcadia,we cannot expect police presence at the intersection for the whole time that our children need protection from the heavy traffic.
Tragedies occur in a split second. Accidents have happened before and will happen again if we do nothing. Please support us by signing this petition. We are asking for the placement of a trained crossing guard at the intersection of First Ave. and California St. by First Avenue Middle School in Arcadia, CA.

I am on traffic duty every morning and see that there is an issue with parents in a hurry and unpredictable student behavior. A crossing guard would be terrific insurance for our students' safety
As a parent who had a child that went to First Ave and will have one next year, I know first hand how dangerous that intersection is. Car drives don't pay attention, there were so many scary moments. Please provide a crossing guard.
This is a major problem. My son Marco who is in 8th grade has almost been hit several times at this crosswalk. I have brought it up to APD several times. I own the Martial Arts school on the corner and watch people go through the stop sign all day. Literally 4-5 times a day. It is really bad before and after school.
I have almost been hit here several times. I fear for my daughter's life when she has to cross the street without me. It is a real problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dear Parents & Community, This is a very important issue that needs to be addressed. Our children are in danger every day as there are many careless uncaring drivers who don't take the time to look out for our children. There have been MANY near misses in this crosswalk. We DO NOT want a tragedy to happen before we do something about this. We have to know that it could easily be our own child or someone close to us. We desperately need a crossing guard, before the next child(or adult) gets killed!
