Whereas the work of recruiting, representing, and organizing members of SEIU Local 1000 is done by its certified stewards, and

Whereas the SEIU Local 1000 Policy File requires stewards to become certified though the Leadership Apprentice Program for Stewards (LAPS), and

Whereas the SEIU Local 1000 President stopped the processing of LAPS applications and the training of accepted LAPS candidates in Spring 2020, and

Whereas the COVID-19 pandemic has increased challenges to the existing stewards and highlighted the urgent need for additional stewards in our worksites,

We the undersigned stewards and members of SEIU Local 1000 call upon President Yvonne Walker to immediately resume accepting applications of members in good standing who are willing to take on the responsibilities of stewardship, to adjust the LAPS training and apprenticeship activities to accommodate the teleworking environment and COVID-19 safety guidelines, and to expedite the training and certification of new stewards.

Updates

November 6, 2020

The momentum behind this push is undeniable and it proves that members are fed up with the leadership blocking our ability to organize. Yvonne Walker is stalling while our worksites suffer but the energy from this movement shows she cannot ignore us much longer.

President Yvonne Walker recently argued to expedite LAPS training for candidates to become stewards in a newly organized bargaining unit that had no stewards. It was done mainly on Zoom. Then to deny other bargaining units who have no stewards in many buildings is hypocritical. I demand that President Walker treat every bargaining unit fairly and open up LAPS to train more job stewards.

please help we are exhausted. There are some areas where there is one active steward doing the work of many. We need more stewards

I have 4 people ready for LAPS. Two are acting officers that only need to complete their shadow week and two ready to become stewards. Let start LAPS!

I am a new hire. On the recommendation of a union brother I'm signing this. Many of my colleagues were hired in the last 2 years, but lack basic info about the union or their rights. None of my coworkers knew who their rep or steward was. It took me several months to track down someone connected to our DLC. I'd like to train in the LAPS program to help reverse that and make local 1000 strong in my department. [You may use my statement, but please keep my information anonymous]

I would love to see the LAPS training on ZOOM. The technology is easy and the conversion from class to the web should be easy. The shadowing is obviously the challenge, but we always have the war stories that are very informative.

I was able to complete the LAPS program while fighting stage 3 cervical cancer and it has kept me moving towards a goal for the last year. I would hate to see this opportunity leave for any reason, now more than ever we need STEWARDS!
