In order for our union to have a strong voice, we need to show that we have a supermajority support of at least 70% of our members. We need 490 of the 700 active members to sign this pledge, which will show that you support our efforts toward equitable work enviroments for the 20-21 school year.

An equitable work enviroment is NOT requiring staff to work in the building when there are no students. An equitable work enviroment IS allowing staff to work from home. An equitable work enviroment is NOT putting staff and students at an undue risk.

Our efforts can be many, including: demonstrating outside the Governor's mansion, posting a photo on social media with our own hashtag to create awareness (digital campaign), or presenting at the school board meeting, for example. Please help us help you by using your voice and SIGNING!

Seeing the count hit 250 names reminds me that I am not fighting for a fair workspace alone. My colleagues deserve to feel safe in their homes and this milestone shows we are building the strength needed to face the board.

October 5, 2020

Seeing one hundred of my colleagues sign this pledge in such a short time proves how much we all need these changes to our work environment. Knowing I am not the only one feeling this pressure in our school building keeps me going.

The district has shown a blatant disregard for staff concerns when it comes to safely returning to school. They've announced a move to full in-person learning before we've even finished the first week of hybrid, and before we've even gotten the necessary data from the MDH to go on. I'm taking a stand to do whatever is necessary to ensure our safety is part of the equation.

I believe Sandy's decision to have staff report during Hybrid instruction Mondays through Thursdays is poor leadership. A different approach such as a rotating system of reporting with selected classrooms or programs would meet the need of having people available to meet student's needs while limiting the number of people on site.

I can't possibly work in the building and have my schedule change willy nilly when my own children's schools are on a different schedule. I should not have had to take a leave of absence when I'm perfectly capable of teaching from home. Pandemics are a time for patience, not a time to be rushing back into the building and putting the safety of staff and students at risk.

We deserve to have our voice be heard and validated. We also deserve sick leave especially around covid and testing that don’t compromise our regular sick leave. We deserve the option to teach from home if we are symptomatic without draining our sick bank or retaliation.

I hold 5 virtual meetings per day when students are at home. It is very difficult for me to teach online while wearing a mask. Especially with young learners who can’t see my mouth when teaching letter/sound correlation and my voice being muffled by a mask.

Teachers and paras have been entirely left out of decision-making processes and have been effectively silenced at the district level. Our LEADERSHIP needs to be adaptable right now. It's not the time to double down.

Online learning is preferable.
