We call on the council to stop the proposal to build homes on Wickham Park Golf Course.
This plan would put lasting pressure on the local community, schools, doctors, roads, around 750 golf club members, and the wildlife that depends on the park. Once green space is lost, it is very hard to get it back. Wickham Park is valued not just as a golf course, but as an important open area that supports local life and gives people room to play, walk, and enjoy nature.
There are already 6000 new homes being built just down the road at Melbourne, and because that is in a different local authority to Wickham, the full impact on our area from Welbourne will likely not be properly taken into consideration. That leaves our community at risk of having the burden placed on it without the services and infrastructure to match.
The proposal for a 12 hole golf course would also drive away many members of the golf club. Fewer members means less revenue, and that could quickly push the course into decline. Once that happens, there is a real fear that more house building would follow on the remaining 12 holes.
We ask decision-makers to reject this proposal and protect Wickham Park for the people, the club, and the wildlife that rely on it. Our community needs sensible planning, not development that steadily wears down a much-loved local space.
Building on a green field leasure facility that is used 365 days a year by hundreds of people of both genders. Enabling young to get into sport and older to stay fit isn't looking after the local the populations interests. Plus it is conjesting a managable village roads. Shops. Docyors etc. Especially with the Welbourne village. Project near. Overkill.
