this petition was created to object in terms of rates assessment irregularities

Updates

March 27, 2017

The scale of this feedback confirms that these rate assessment irregularities are widespread. I have requested a formal meeting with the municipal finance department to present the documentation we have gathered regarding these inconsistencies.

I just discovered recently that my residence at 4 Cochrane avenue has been mistakenly zoned as a COMMERCIAL entity since 1992 by the municipality and I have been paying the much higher COMMERCIAL rate . What recourse do I have and who can I contact to help me correct this ? Thanks

My rates will increase by 36% indicating that the market value of my house has increased by R440 000.00, I totally disagree with this valuation, the fact is that because of crime that is let unattended by the city the value of our property has dropped significantly. The for sale boards are staying longer then before of which clearly indicates the difference between the buyer and the sellers view of the area.

If you want to see your increase you can check your 2012 municipal value on www.durban.gov.za:88/propertysearch.htm . Choose sectional title or full title. Then on next page fill in street number and street address. This will give municipal value. Minus the R120000 rebate and multiply by 0.00976 to get annual rates. Repeat for 2017 under www.durban.gov.za:89/propertysearch.htm. This time minus the rebate of R120000 and multiply by factor of 0.0127 to get annual rates. Work out you increase. It will be FAR higher than the increase in your municipal value because the municipality has increased the factor by 30.1% as well as increasing the municipal value. They have surely done the maths wrong.

A 66% increase is not on. Totally unacceptable.
