Although this will not benefit me, I would like to take my experience in CIS Composition and Literature to encourage students to take a challenging course. This would encourage students who may be hesitant to take a course that could lower their GPA to register for these two difficult but rewarding classes. As I can attest to my classmates and my writing skills improving because of these courses, I would like future students to have this opportunity as well. By weighting this class, we, as a Mounds View community, can allow students to reach their full potentials.

Updates

March 23, 2018

I am currently preparing a formal proposal for the administration to explain why these CIS courses deserve weighted credit. Please email your grade level principal today to tell them that you support this change for our academic curriculum.

The momentum behind this push proves the community wants to reward students for taking on difficult coursework. Send a direct email to your representative on the school board today to demand this change. We have their attention now so keep the pressure on.

My high school CIS classes were the most instrumental in preparing me for college level courses. They were challenging, informative, and taught me the analytical thinking skills that I use everyday. CIS classes are incredibly important, and no capable student should be discouraged from taking them because of how it might affect their GPA.

I can honestly say that I chose to take AP Literature and AP English Language rather than CIS in high school, because I knew that the two CIS courses were significantly harder and significantly more work. To not have them weighted makes zero sense and is a disservice to the talented and hardworking students who enroll in them.

I took CIS courses and AP courses in HS, and it wasn’t until college admissions that I found out it wasn’t weighted the same. That is not fair- you do ACTUAL college work on a daily basis, unlike a college classroom, and yet it is not weighted the same as the modified AP coursework.

INCREDIBLY valuable course. CIS Lit was more work than the literature course I took at the U of M a year later and a more rewarding learning experience.

Having taken 5 AP courses and 2 CIS courses in high school, I can say that, while all were scholastically demanding, no class was a a greater challenge than CIS Composition. No class had a greater impact on my collegiate career, and the fact that it and CIS Lit aren't weighted makes no sense to me or anyone who has taken them.

As a teacher of both the AP Literature and the CIS Composition and Literature courses, I can affirm that CIS is more rigorous, more aligned with the work students will do at college, and more STEAM focused.

I saved so much money by taking these classes before going to college and there is literally no other class that would have made me as prepared for college
