The Moroccan American Community joining hands with other American Muslims to add two holidays to the school calendar: While this issue currently is in the forefront of some Cities education discussions, it has not yet reached Capitol Hill. After years of American Muslim Community outreach, some school boards started to consider adding Muslim holidays to the calendar. But there is still fragmentation in the voices and the American Muslim community needs to do its part and raise awareness. The 2 Holidays that we are asking US Public Officials to include in the School Calendar are: 1 - Eid al-Fitr, or the Festival of Breaking the Fast, which marks the end of the month of Ramadan. 2- Eid al-Adha, the Feast of the Sacrifice, which commemorates the prophet Ibrahim's faith in being willing to sacrifice his son. Make your voice heard. Sign this petition and lets take it to Capitol Hill on October 15, 2009.

I have been reading the stories from families who are tired of choosing between religious observance and their children missing important class time. This struggle hits home for me because I want my own kids to feel that their traditions are valued in the hallways of their schools. We are continuing to organize these efforts so that our holidays are finally recognized on the official calendar.

Seeing this grow so quickly reminds me of the years I spent watching my own children have to choose between their education and their faith. This movement is gaining real strength because so many of you understand why our holidays belong on the calendar alongside every other religious celebration.

ABOUT TIME. We contribute to this country too. Why shouldnt our kids get the same respect as other holidays?

Seems fair. Schools recognize other religious holidays so why not these ones too? Everyone deserves a day to celebrate.

My kids always miss these days anyway. It makes no sense to mark them absent for celebrating with their family. Just make it official already.
