We, the undersigned, are concerned East York residents who urge Toronto City Council to take action to make our neighbourhood safer.

Whereas, the intersection of Cosburn and Cedarvale has been the site of several serious traffic incidents, including a recent pedestrian fatality on December 1, 2016; and

Whereas, these streets are adjacent to a City park, arena, baseball and soccer fields, community centre with seniors and after-school programs, curling rink, off-leash dog park, playground, skate park, swimming pool, splash pad and school; and

Whereas, we want our streets and intersections to be safe for everyone to cross;

Therefore, we the undersigned call on Toronto City Council to replace the existing pedestrian crossover with traffic control signals at the intersection of Cosburn and Cedarvale Avenues, and undertake other traffic control measures to ensure that the Stan Wadlow neighbourhood is safer for pedestrians.

Updates

I have been spending my afternoons at the intersection watching how difficult it is for families to cross safely toward the park. The silence from the city office is frustrating but it only motivates me to keep pushing for these traffic lights.

Seeing this momentum grow brings me back to that intersection and reminds me why I started this fight in the first place. I feel a real sense of hope today knowing so many neighbors agree that our streets must be safe for our children and seniors.

My Dear Mother Jae Blue was the fatality on December the 1st. The intersection is dangerous. Please change it so no one else will have to go through the heartbreak that my family has suffered.

My beloved aunt was the victim on December 1, 2016. Her death was tragic, needless and preventable. Please prioritize pedestrian safety over traffic flow

Everyone would benefit from the intersection being safer, but especially the more vulnerable users who come to this area for the community centre, skating arena, elementary school and swimming pool.

There also needs to be a pedestrian cross walk east of this intersection by Oak Park Ave. where people cross over from the East York Curling Club parking lot. The street has become more busy and people are racing across to get to the park.

Someday my son is going to want to walk to this park alone - will I be able to let him?

An arena, a community centre, a curling club, a parking lot, two bus stops and a park entrance, all that in a family neighbourhood and next to a school. Yes, we need more protected crossings and traffic lights!

Safety before traffic flow.
