7th Avenue North between 3rd Street and 10th Street has become a speed through street in North Jacksonville Beach because it is one of the only roads with no stop sign. There have been a couple accidents, but not enough to get the city's 'quota' up enough.
Our street is a shared space, we walk, ride bikes, and do this with our children and pets. We cannot share it with cars driving 30-40 miles per hour.
With more kids and cars traveling faster and faster (soccer and church mom's included!) we need something to slow people down.
This petition is for a stop sign, speed bumps, or at the very least "Children Playing" signage - anything to mitigate the danger.
We hope BUMC will help us as well!
I've lived on this street for over 25 years. And I've tried to get stop signs installed several times over that period of time. The city's response has been 'too many stop sign at Jax Beach already' and 'not enough accidents to warrant a stop sign.', among others. But the one time the cops set up a radar trap on our street, in an hour period during the noontime, 12 citations for speeding were issued. Not a problem? I guess it will unfortunately take someone getting killed to get the city's attention.
