With around 40,000,000 vehicles on Great Britain's streets and a 10.4% increase in traffic on major roads from 2009 to 2019 (Source: DfT National Road Traffic Survey), our streets and roads are coming under ever-increasing pressure.

Despite this, the powers that be are reducing road space across the land and we believe is a major misjudgement. Have disabled passengers that require door-to-door transport been considered when an existing road is converted into an empty cycle lane? What about ambulances trying to reach critically ill patients that get caught up in additional traffic backing up from the latest street closure?

There are a lot of unanswered questions here, therefore our request is remarkably simple – ‘Stop Shutting Streets!’

Although this campaign has been setup by the Licensed Private Hire Car Association and Private Hire News magazine, road closures can affect all motorists. They hit those even harder who are trying to earn a living on the streets, like the many brave Taxi and Private Hire Vehicle (PHV) drivers connected to our organisations who have been out on the frontline moving doctors, nurses and many other important people around despite the dangers of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Our aim is for ‘Stop Shutting Streets’ to be a unified campaign, shared amongst a coalition of road-users from all backgrounds. Please help spread the message by signing our petition, sharing the campaign on social media using the #StopShuttingStreets hashtag and help make sure the voice of road-users is heard loud and clear.

Thank you!

We are gaining momentum but we need to push harder to reach our first milestone. Please post this on your social media pages right now so we can show the authorities how many people are fed up with these closures.

I'm totally against the blocking of roads, I am a carer for both parents who have mobility issues and need car for hospital appointments etc, the closures are causing untold stress to both my parents and I. These closures are totally unnecessary

This couldn't have been mismanaged more than it has been already. Undemocratic - anti-disabled - anti elderly - anti anyone with a challenge. The shops will disappear quicker than the councils can say 'shop local' - this is killing local shops.

Shutting off streets just creates a deserted, inaccessible enclave for the wealthy and forces the noise and pollution onto roads where low income people live, creating delays for cars and buses alike discriminating against people that can’t walk or cycle to their destination.

I am a disabled parent and being able to drive is a lifeline for me and my family. Closing roads and stopping access for people who do not have the option to walk or use public transport will have a detrimental effect for disabled people like me.

As London black cab driver that I am, I’m finding it hard to drop or pick my customer from door to door all because of this shutting the street and it’s cost bigger fare to pay at the end of their journey in the taxi, which is not fair. Please stop Shutting the Street.

These road closures are affecting businesses, crime, emergency vehicles, disabled people and the elderly. Some areas might have cleaner air, but the traffic is being forced onto other roads causing congestion and even more pollution. For the sake of what?
