DO YOU CARE???
DID YOU KNOW????
Westminster Council published a Stopping Up Order Notice
on 10 May 2013
DO YOU KNOW WHAT THIS MEANS????
The notice intends to give away a large part of the pavement on Edgware Road reducing it in width considerably (details at the bottom of the petition).
There are TWO SIMPLE YET COMPELLING REASONS why this order should be rejected:
1. Westminster Council are giving away this pavement to a developer for near to nothing. It is an extremely valuable piece of highway, worth millions of pounds, belonging to TfL which is being given away with no benefit to the public.
2. Westminster Council is permitting the pavement width to be reduced dramatically. This action will make these pavements drastically narrower, more congested, unsafe and extremely dangerous, and compromises the future of our school children, their parents, local business, local shoppers and tourists. Edgware Road is one of London's busiest thoroughfares and to make the pavement so narrow is putting people's lives at risk. Why has Westminster Council chosen to forfeit the safety of its residents, school children and taxpayers?
Why doesn’t the developer just remain and build what he likes within his existing boundaries, why does he need the pavement, is it for extra profit? Is it for selfish greed? Is our safety so cheap?
We oppose the stopping up order and demand its outright rejection.
We call on the Secretary of State for Transport and the London Mayor, Boris Johnson who is responsible for TfL, and the Transport Commissioner to order a public inquiry.

1. Edgware Road (an ancient Roman road) between
Nutford Place and George Street - an extremely valuable public highway
belonging to TfL.

I was walking down Edgware Road earlier today and honestly it just hit me all over again how insane these plans are because there is barely enough room for people to walk as it is. I have been fielding so many messages from neighbors who are just as confused as I am about why the council thinks giving away our public space for a developer's profit is acceptable. It feels like they are counting on us not paying attention but we are definitely watching now.

I checked the count just now and we are hovering right near that hundred mark which is wild considering how fast this actually started moving. If you happen to be on Twitter right now please drop a link because I really want to hit that number before the council staff get back to their desks tomorrow morning.

THIS IS ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS. Why are the council giving away public land to developers to pad their own pockets at our expense?
my kids walk to school here and i am constantly worried about cars. making the path smaller will make it so dangerous. stop this now.
total greed plain and simple. keep our pavements public space
it is already impossible to walk down this road with a pram without being pushed into the traffic. how is making it smaller even legal
i work on this road every day and it is way too crowded as it is. please listen to us for once

I object to the petition because of the impact on the community. This is not just a pavement, it is a promenade, made safe for people of all races and religion to walk and gather safely with our children. Please do not do this!
