Petition for the Mahtomedi school district, local governments, and partners to provide safer walking and biking routes for students/families to Mahtomedi schools. Sign and share to indicate your support! Comment on particular areas of concern and/or opportunities.

The Mahtomedi school district will be unable to meet social distancing recommendations on school buses in the new school year without drastically increasing transportation expenses. A likely increased number of parents/students driving to schools will increase already congested school entrances. Many students/families could walk or bike to school but the lack of safe routes discourages this healthy, environmentally-friendly, and equitable alternative to busing and driving.

Immediate steps should be taken to provide safer walking and biking routes to school for students and families living near Mahtomedi schools. The Mahtomedi school district, along with area municipalities and partners, should work together to act on this list of community-sourced safety improvements to make walking and biking to Mahtomedi schools a feasible alternative to busing/driving. This would ensure that buses remain a safe option for students living too far to walk/bike and provide an alternative for students and families for which driving is not an option.

We have three young children; one will be at Wildwood and another at O.H. Anderson for the 2020-2021 school year. We moved to Mahtomedi nearly 8 years ago because we appreciated the small-town feel, the highly regarded schools, and the opportunity for our family and our children to walk and bike to community amenities. Although we are within walking/biking distance to the district schools, the lack of sidewalks/trails and unsafe crossings make these journeys more precarious than they need to be. Providing safe routes for biking/walking to school is a win-win situation for the District, students and their families, and the Mahtomedi community.

Concerned about safety on Warner Road. Any way to organize parent safety patrols for spring of 2021? I am grandparent and would help with a temporary solution til a more permanent one could be found.

We need better road accommodations for bikes and walkers. We live on Park Ave and there are no speed limit signs in our area, on Park. Drivers arriving at and departing the beach often speed on Park.

Consider closing 1 lane on Warner during select morning and afternoon hours to accommodate walkers and bikers. Put a crossing guard at Stillwater and Warner.

Safer routes would be great ! Walking and biking access to OHA and safe ways for kids to cross hwy 12 to WW, MMS and MHS are priorities in my opinion.

Should have been done many years ago! We’ve heard there will be a sidewalk going in south of OHAnderson School scheduled out for a few years. By then all those kids will be grown and unfortunately not many coming up. It’s time they do it now. Very dangerous with South Warner so narrow with lots of traffic.

Sidewalks along the road in front of OHA, specifically, is a must! Though most drivers are cautious when picking up their children at the end of the school day, it is a challenging place for kids to bike and walk, and share the road with drivers. There is just not enough space.

Although sidewalks and speed limit signs do make a difference, when you have people that do not obey a sign there is no point. As a 30year resident of Warner Ave S, a few doors away from OHA, and a former student I agree something needs to be done on Warner. My dad fought for a long time to have a sidewalk put in, when I was in school we had to walk in the ditch to school. What Warner needs is a few stop signs right by the school. I can’t even count the number of people that race past our house all hours of the day. Having such a long, straight road with no stop sign it turns into a drag strip. PLEASE INSTALL STOP SIGNS!!!
