The city of Mahtomedi is working on improving pedestrian, bike and wheelchair safety on the city streets. The cities of St Paul, Minneapolis and others around the state have implemented lower speed limits (20 and 25mph) for improved safety of all who are on our city streets. With the lack of sidewalks in the city and the increased vehicle traffic in the area over the last 10 years, and with death and injury rates for pedestrians and cyclists climbing it is time to take action.
Results show that the average risk of severe injury for a pedestrian struck by a vehicle reaches 10% at an impact speed of 16 mph, 25% at 23 mph, 50% at 31 mph, 75% at 39 mph, and 90% at 46 mph. The average risk of death for a pedestrian reaches 10% at an impact speed of 23 mph, 25% at 32 mph, 50% at 42 mph, 75% at 50 mph, and 90% at 58 mph.
With the absence of in person meetings, the city of Mahtomedi needs to hear from residents that they support the implementation of 20 mph speed limits on residential streets and 25 mph on city arterial streets. Please sign this petition and provide appropriate comments in support.

The volume of support for this speed limit policy has reached a level that necessitates an immediate formal presentation to the City Council. I am finalizing the summary report of these signatures to submit as an official record for the upcoming public hearing.

I am a student at OH Anderson Elementary and I would like to have a safe route to school for walking.
As someone who uses a bike, walking and a car to get to the Mahtomedi businesses, church, Library, post office, etc. this a good idea. The extra reaction time from lower speeds adds to safety for all travel modes.
I live on a residential street with many dog walkers, runners, and kids riding bikes. There are no sidewalks, and the roads are too narrow to accommodate a car going 30mph with a kid is riding their bike just feet away on the same road. I think most adult drivers have the common sense to slow down around kids, but many times I see younger/newer drivers who see that the speed limit is 30 mph, and they don’t see anything wrong with going that limit while others are sharing the road.
I am a resident of White Bear Lake, residing on South Shore Boulevard, and I support reducing the speed limit to 20 mph in Mahtomedi. Cyclist, pedestrian, and civilian lives are far more valuable than being a few minutes early to an appointment by car. Walking and cycling around Mahtomedi, White Bear would feel much safer with a reduced speed limit; I wouldn't be as wary of approaching traffic.
I live on Old Wildwood Road which is currently set at 30 mph. The current speed limit is way too fast for this street as it has an attached bike and pedestrian lane. A recent speed trailer study by the Washington County Sheriff's Office indicated that about 33% of cars traveling on our road were going faster than 30 mph with some in excess of 50 mph. There have also been two accidents on this road due to excessive speeding where the car in each of the incidents went off the road and down the hill. This could have resulted in a pedestrian fatality. Now is the time for the City of Mahtomedi to lower the speed limit on residential streets.

I live on Old Wildwood Rd and the 30mph speed limit is way too fast. There are way too many pedestrians using this road for recreational purposes and safety is a huge concern. The lowering of the speed limit is necessary and will contribute to an overall safer community.
