Hwy 12 Mahtomedi Greenway Project - safe transportation options for all

Washington Cty Hwy 12- Wildwood Rd (was MN 244) is being rebuilt in 2022. There was an open house on March 5th 2020 for this once in 30 years opportunity to improve our community safety for all . A number of concerns about lack of pedestrian and bicycle safety were brought up in 2020. There will now be a City of Mahtomedi council workshop with Washington County on Feb 16th to further discuss this project. This meeting is open to the public and interaction by the public is encouraged.
Please invite community leaders, and encourage your neighbors, bicycle, walking and Safe Routes to Schools advocates to sign this petition, comment and attend
Community advocates would like to propose this 1.25 mile section of 244/12 as major “Greenway” and Safe Routes to Schools corridor for bicyclists and pedestrians, connecting the major shopping, neighborhood, parks and school destinations in Mahtomedi, that are now isolated by the unsafe current 244 traffic congestion and high speed traffic.
Bicycle and Pedestrian “Greenway” Corridor Priorities to Consider:
1) Wedgewood Drive Intersection & Crosswalk
Estimated 70% of drivers do not stop or slow down for pedestrians within the crosswalk.
Cars have difficulty turning onto 12/244 from Wedgwood Drive.
2) Bike Lanes
Improve the ability of students and families to safety bike and walk along 244/12.
3) Speed Reduction & Traffic Calming
Estimated over 70% of drivers exceed the posted speed limit in this road section.

Having lived on Wedgewood for 21 years, I can recall only once when cars stopped to allow kids to walk across 244 to the park on the north side of the street. Even years ago when I was pushing my stroller and tried to cross I was honked at by a car. A stoplight is critical at this intersection.
Would love to see a reduction to the speed limit or at the very least, a consistency to the posted speeds (40mph in one direction and 45mph in the other, at the same spot). Especially along Wedgewood Park/at the crosswalk. Would love to safely walk and bike along 244 along Lost Lake - a separation from the highway would be nice.
I would like to slow down the traffic and create a more user friendly for all types of transportation and walkers into the communities of Willernie and Mahtomedi. It is a bucolic scene as you enter between the two ponds. Let’s take advantage of it!
I am an avid cyclist from Oakdale and I often use this road to get from the northern end of the Vento Trail to the Gateway Trail. Bike friendly safety improvements are needed and would be greatly appreciated!
Please prioritize safety improvements for 1) Wedgewood Drive Crosswalk 2) Bike Lanes and signs 3) Speed reduction and calming, to enable our families and students to safety bike and walk directly to community schools, businesses, parks and churches, including the new library.
I am a student and I would like to have a safe route to walk to school. Thank you.

We certainly can make this area safer for bikes, peds, cars and busses. I've never understood the reason for the high speed exiting Mahtomedi. The turn to and from Cedar/Hall is so difficult that our teen drivers have to drive all the way around to avoid it. Great initiative!
