The entrance to Minnetonka Middle School West (MMW) is on the busy stretch of Hwy 41 between Hwy 7 and Hwy 5. This school supports upwards of 1,000 6, 7 and 8th graders every year. Between 8am and 9:15am each weekday morning and again between 3:50 and 4:30 many students leave the school on foot or on bicycles. These students come into direct contact with the traffic on Hwy 41, traveling at high speeds and often not paying attention to the student population.
School districts commonly create safe passage for the students through the use of traffic lights and School Zone designations. No such safety precautions are provided at MMW as Hwy 41 is a state Hwy and not controlled by the county or town of Chanhassen.
This petition seeks support for a minimum School Zone designation to be in effect when students are present.

I see the counter inching up and it is honestly wild to think we are just a few away from 250 signatures because that threshold is going to be the absolute game changer when I finally get to walk into the state office. I was just looking at the number and realized we are almost at one hundred signatures which is honestly kind of wild because I started this on a whim while staring at the traffic on 41. If everyone reading this would just send the link to a few people before the afternoon pickup shift we might actually hit the milestone today and it would really help when I eventually talk to the state people.

Students want to get to school but I know some kids who use that crosswalk who are afraid to cross on their own they have a parent walk with them sometimes there are kids who are afraid to cross when I get there and I have to walk with them so they feel safe that shouldn't be ok
The school intersection is scary as a driver to safely navigate without a stoplight. Imagine what it is like for students! Fortunately the student that was hit crossing the crosswalk is reported "fine". However this needs to be a wake up call. Protect students from the possibility being injured or killed by using this unsafe crosswalk.
This is such a busy area, and so dangerous. I saw two boys crossing at the crosswalk yesterday outside school - lights flashing. A car going at least 55 mph drove right through the crosswalk in front of the kids!! Something needs to be done there!
The unenforced crosswalk across a HIGHWAY is nothing but dangerous. It's a visually cluttered & very busy intersection. Build a pedestrian bridge or a light, & let's not wait till 2020 to get it done! Our kids should be able to *safely* cross the street to get to school. Talk about creating a car culture!
We need the support of MN-DOT to help protect the safety of our children. Put the lives of our children ahead of the inconvenience of a stoplight. If we value safety, and we value children, there can be only one logical answer: Add a stoplight to Hwy 41.
We need to keep our children safe they are our future

I want to bike to school, but I can't because I can't cross a highway. With this petition I might be able too. Please help me and other students who want to bike/walk to school.
