Watford Borough Council has refused to grant a new lease to Watford Indoor Bowls Club. So the club has applied to the courts for a lease with an affordable rent as suggested by an Expert Witness appointed in accordance with the law on this subject. The council suggests members should relocate to another club, but this would not be able to accommodate the existing 300 members.

In the Conservatives’ Mainfesto for the May 3 elections this year, then Mayor Candidate, George Jabbour pledge to save the bowls club if he was elected. Conservative activist, Sarah Hayes, who lives close to the bowls club, is supporting the club and working closely with them to try to stop the council from going ahead with the redevelopment.

I was a member of the club for ovr 20 years and still visit the club as a member of opposing teams. Closure would be a loss to members who use the club more than once a week, but wouls also be the loss of a fixture for other bowls clubs and associations.

Direct quote from the Council website.... ‘Watford Borough Council is committed to providing quality leisure and sporting facilities for the local community’. Presumably this statement now needs the additional words.... ‘indoor bowls excluded’.

It''s a great club for the older generation and also a good form of excise it helped me to get through a serious illness. I have been member for 10 years. It is important this club should not close as it keeps us all active.

Being a senior member of the community and having played bowls for 25+ years, I see this facility and the friends I meet there as an important part of my life. This is one of the few remaining indoor bowls clubs servicing this part of Hertfordshire

The vast majority of people using this facility have paid high rates of taxation through there working lives and just when they ask for help from The State, it is taken away from them or they are made to feel a burden, this is so wrong on so many levels

I used to come to a business networking group here. As we finished our morning meeting lots of local club members would be arriving to meet, chat and play bowls. It seemed to be a great community space – and beneficial to the health and wellbeing of the local community.

An important facility for all, especially the retired.
