The doors are staying open and the Skeller is officially staying in our community. I am overwhelmed thinking about how many alumni and locals stepped up to protect this piece of our history. We fought for our memories and we won.

Final supporters
This is a petition focused on voicing the Penn State and State College community's displeasure with the announced closing and sale of the Rathskeller and Spats Cafe. I say both Penn State and State College community because this bar/restaurant duo is certainly important to the State College area and the 60+ employees who's livelihoods are tied to the business. However, it is also an important fixture in the lives and memories of hundreds of thousands of Penn State graduates. Not to mention the incredible history of the establishment (85 years and the oldest bar in the state of Pennsylvania). As a Penn State alumnus, I have many fond memories of the Skeller and continue to be a proud patron several times a year when visiting State College. Seeing the first hundred names appear reminds me why this place matters so much to all of us. I still think about those long evenings spent in the booths with friends. Let us keep this energy moving.

The Rathskeller gave us eighty five years of memories and we cannot let those doors close for good. We are approaching one thousand signatures and hitting that mark now would send a powerful signal to the owners before they finalize this sale.

The 'Skeller is a true piece of Americana. Yet the historical institution, which is a thriving business, will soon be only a memory. More history erased as simply as wiping a chalkboard. It's inconceivable the Herlochers can't agree on mutually acceptable lease terms with current tenants. Sad. Very sad!
I am a true local born and raised here. It was sad to hear this news today. Soon I feel that there be nothing left of State College as we see all the high rise buildings going up and now this news. I certainly won’t patronize any new restaurant or bar they might put in the space.
As a short hair ROTC cadet I had many an interesting discussion in the Skellar with fellow students of the long hair, hippie persuasion. The Skellar was not simply a purveyor of fine spirits, but also a place for the meeting of minds. It cannot perish.
As a Penn State alum, I’ve looked forward to my annual stops at the Rathskeller the past 40+ years. My youngest son is now a sophomore at Penn State and I’d hoped it would be part of the “tradition “ I could pass on.
I think there has to be something said for tradition, and the idea that a new owner should swoop in and insinuate themselves on a place as historic as the Rathskeller is disappointing, and a perfect example of the crass commercialism of modern capitalism.

Too much history for this amazing bar to go away. My Dad worked at the Skeller while going to Penn State and has been a favorite place to go for as long as I can remember. Must keep the Rathskeller alive!
