The city actually backed down and Patriot Avenue is staying open. I cannot even wrap my head around the fact that they listened after all the chaos of the last few weeks but we really did it. Keep your eyes peeled just in case they try to pull this again …

Final supporters
The City of Pequot Lakes is planning to spend $1.7 million to expand Trailside Park. This plan includes closing Patriot Avenue.
This is happening NOW:
- As early as May 1, Patriot Avenue will close, permanently
- Traffic will be re-routed to Government Drive (Lucky’s) and Front Street (Thurlows)
- $1.7million will be “borrowed” from the 371 Bypass Funds MNDOT will be giving the city for the purpose of maintaining roads, formerly owned by the state/county
- Tax payers will feel the effects of paying back the loan.
- Businesses were not consulted
- Citizens are surprised by the extent of the project and the price
We are petitioning that the City of Pequot Lakes HALT this project.
The city believes they are doing this for the economic revival of struggling businesses, but business owners say this is the last thing needed. Additionally, it is astonishing how few people understand the extent of this project or how much it costs.
We the undersigned believe:
- Patriot Avenue should remain open. Rerouting traffic to Front Street and Government drive is a safety issue and will cause congestion.
- The City of Pequot Lakes needs to be fiscally responsible and only spend money that has been donated or raised for this project, not borrow from our road maintenance fund
- The impact of the 371 Bypass needs to be fully understood before further construction occurs
- The people who love this town need to understand more project details and have a voice (perhaps with a vote) before further movement on this project.

I was just over by the shops today and thinking about how much traffic this is going to shove onto Front Street which is already a total mess during the rush. Nobody seems to have a real answer about how this money is supposed to get paid back or why we are prioritizing a park expansion over actual road maintenance that we need right now.

I honestly did not think this would gain so much traction so fast but here we are and my laptop has been pinging all morning with notifications. It feels like the whole town finally woke up at the same time and realized someone is trying to mess with our roads without asking us first. Seriously what were they thinking with this budget because seeing all these signatures makes me feel like we might actually have a shot at stopping this total disaster.

I see the numbers ticking up but we really need a bigger surge if we want the council to actually blink before they burn that bypass money. Tell your neighbors about the mess this will cause on Front Street because honestly nobody else is going to tell them how bad the traffic will get once the road is gone.

This would, in all reality, destroy all the small businesses that keep Pequot Lakes afloat. Although it sounds wonderful, the city needs to "live within its means," just as each of its residents must. Let's recuperate from all the changes 371 has done to the city, before we add more.
With signs - travelers have easy on/off from 371 via Patriot Avenue - if part of Patriot Avenue is closed down it will deter people from coming into town at all. Businesses cannot handle one more “ding” on the traffic count!
Shunting traffic onto either Front St. or Government Dr. would just make it more difficult to patronize the local businesses. Government can get narrow enough with parking that adding more traffic would be dangerous. I can think of better ways for the City to spend $1,700,000.
This is crazy, my property taxes have doubled and now they want to install a splash pad that will require crazy amounts of maintenance and borrow the funds from money needed to maintain the old highway! The taxpayers should be able to vote on something like this. It's time for a change at city hall!
too much , too soon. we don't have enough information in the form of vehicle and pedestrian traffic studies, after the bypass, to even think about changing patterns. Also the businesses need time to recover and re-tool if necessary, from the bypass.
I think this is gonna cause so much devastation on our lil town. I love all my lil shops and to borrow money to pay for it thats bs why don't y'all put something amazing in our town that everyone could use and or be part of. How about a community center to kids and teens and volunteers or help our low income families or single people. I hate seeing money being thrown around to Just cause problems instead of working together as a community or helping the community. This is a crapy deal.
I encourage all of you to look into AGENDA 21. Ask your council members where the idea of this “master plan” came from? Agenda 21 is at work in your town!! Don’t be fooled!! This is just the start of it!! Ask what the continuing mantainence cost is going to be after this is paid for?

I use Patriot Ave on a daily basis, it will be a struggle navigating around town without it, especially come summer months! The town has already been changed by the bypass so much, is this even necessary?!
