Please show your support to reinstate the basketball hoop at Compton green play area.

Since 2018 residents have tried to improve the basketball court and offering for early and mid adolescence children in Compton, that are not catered for in the younger children play park activities.

In 2022 the basketball hoop was removed without notice or any consultation. No safety inspectors report has been produced to confirm the reasons for removal.

Most recently, in December 2025, the Parish Council has made a pre-enquiry to Guildford Borough Council to turn the basketball court and surrounding area into a car park.

The loss of public amenity and youth play area is contrary to National Planning Policy Framework, para 153 and 154, development in Green Belt, and does not meet the criteria for exceptions.

It is also contrary to Guildford Local Plan: Strategy and Sites Policy P1 Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Area of Great Landscape Value, Policy 2 Green Belt and Policy D1 Place Shaping.

It is also contrary to Local Plan Policy ID4 and ID5 Loss of Amenity Green Space - Open Space.

The location of the proposed car park raises further health, safety and well-being concerns about the introduction of more cars adjacent to a children’s play park and the risk of injury and increased harm from pollutants. The basketball court provides much needed activity space for our young village residents, in a healthy outdoor environment. Together with interaction and connection with peers and other young people supporting their mental health, wellbeing and growth.

The Compton playground is one of the few components that keeps a sense of community in Compton. The village is spread out along a long and busy road , the B3000. The only place people come together is at the playground and village green. There is nothing else for children and families and I believe it’s imperative that preserving and maintaining the playground is a priority. When my son was younger we used it at least 2/3 times a week.

The basketball court (and hoop) should be updated/reinstated to allow for additional options for children to take part in a healthy and active lifestyle.

It makes no sense at all for the removal of a sporting amenity for the older children. We talk about the evils of social media for them so we should encourage healthy activities .

A big yes to the basketball court and a hard no to the car park. I don’t see there is an issue with parking on Spiceall and it’s the only area of the green that provides any shade in the summer months. There was a family picnicking there just this afternoon and there are plenty of parking spaces available on the east side of Spiceall.

We should not be encouraging more cars to park in the village, especially on the village green where children play. The older kids would love the basketball hoop reinstated.

My grandsons love playing there when they come to visit, this would be so sad to lose!

Keep the green space for the kids and the community, not a car park!
