Monticello Trails Middle School has had a Veterans Day Ceremony for years and has become a great tradition in our school! We want to keep our tradition going!

Our principal, Melissa Hansen, originally decided not to do anything this year at MTMS for Veterans Days. Some of us students found this out two weeks before Veterans Day and started asking questions as to why. We met with the principal and we were still not happy that we were not doing our traditional Veterans Day Ceremony. We did not want to stop there and continued to see what we could do to get it back. Here are a few of the things we have done in the very short time:

  • One student ordered t-shirts to hand out "Save MTMS Veterans Day Tradition"
  • Emails were sent to the superintendent and school board.
  • Media was contacted and Fox 4 KC covered the story and here is a link of their coverage. http://fox4kc.com/2017/11/06/shawnee-eighth-grader...
  • Paper petitions have been started and now starting this electronic petition.

Some of us are meeting with the principal on Wednesday, Nov. 15th, after school to discuss the events of this year's Veterans Day and plan for next year. We want to collect as many signatures as possible to show our principal how many students, parents and veterans want to keep our tradition.

Please sign this petition to show your support!

I honestly never thought this would gain this much steam when we started sending those first emails in such a rush. It feels like the whole community is finally paying attention to this tradition and seeing how important it really is to all of us.

A grandparent & a veteran. We support the continuing of the Veterans Day program at our Granddaughter’s middle school.

Wow! Way to go kids!! I am so sorry that your principal does not see the value in honoring our Vets. MCMS and RE went all out to honor the men and women who served and continue to serve.

What a shame to remove a learning experience that can leave a mark bigger than any textbook!

I feel it is important for the kids to gear stories from the vets to be able to understand what they sacrifice for us and our freedoms

It is important to teach our children what Veterans Day is about and why it’s important to show our appreciation to our veterans! As a Gold Star sister I️ believe this is something that should be sacred to all Americans and is not something that should be taken out of schools.

Do not lose the opportunity to honor veterans and teach the youth about them and their importance.

This principal had a chance to allow a young lady to to realize her dreams of keeping with the tradition of veterans day ceremony. Keep of the work Katelyn. Don't let anyone stop you.
