We, as the Monticello Independent School family, do not agree with recent actions taken by the Monticello Independent School Board. On the night of December 17, 2012, five members of the Monticello School Board cast their votes concerning the most significant issue in our school’s long history. These five members took it upon themselves to decide the fate of an institution which has stood for over a century. By a narrow margin, they voted to consolidate Monticello Independent School with the Wayne County School system. Most students, teachers, parents, alumni, employees and friends of Monticello Independent were informed of the meeting and subsequent decision the following morning.
We understand the hardship facing our school system, and the need for reform and sacrifice. However, we are also aware that consolidation with the Wayne County School system is not the only solution. It is the easiest solution. As citizens of this community, it is our right and our duty to express our concerns in this matter.
By signing this petition you are stating that you do not support the Monticello School Board in their vote to consolidate the Monticello School System with the Wayne County School system. As parents, family members, friends, current students, alumni and employees, we deserve a voice in a matter that so greatly affects our community and the education of our children. By signing this petition you are declaring your support for Monticello Independent School remaining a separate school system, keeping our tradition, our mascot, our school colors and our building intact as they have been since 1905.
Reaching two hundred and fifty signatures serves as a powerful reminder of how much this institution means to our community. It is clear that many people share the conviction that our school deserves a future independent of the proposed consolidation.

Seeing the momentum grow around this cause reminds me that our school is more than just a building to this community. This shift in energy proves that people are ready to engage in a deeper conversation about our future.

So many memories in those hallways. My grandmother went there and my son is there now. Please reconsider this plan.

This is ridiculous. Monticello is the heart of this town. You cant just close down a hundred years of history because it is easy.

The board members should be ashamed of themselves for doing this behind our backs. total lack of respect for the people they represent.
