Save Knaresborough ’s Green Belt Now!

As part of the District Plan, Harrogate Borough Council are proposing to lose parts of Knaresborough's Green Belt to three permanent Gypsy and Traveller sites in CALCUTT on Forest Moor Road and Thistle Hill. These sites are in addition to the existing formal site at the Thistle Hill / Southern Bypass junction which has 20 plots.

More than half of all Gypsy and Traveller sites in the 505 square mile Harrogate District are sited in an area of less than 3 square miles in Knaresborough and specifically on Green Belt in Calcutt which has a tiny population of 440. In this community we want a fair and diverse society where all people are welcome but we do not agree that the law should be broken by anyone and that we must protect our green belt.

Harrogate Borough Council are treating Knaresborough and Calcutt residents unfairly by:

  1. Failing to follow national government guidelines and to evenhandedly enforce planning law and policy for unlawful settlements on Green Belt land.
  2. Failing to fairly distribute Gypsy and Traveller sites evenly across the whole District.
  3. Failing to protect Knaresborough's Green Belt.

OUR GREEN BELT IS UNDER THREAT and once gone ... IT WILL BE LOST FOREVER

What can you do?

I honestly never thought we would see this much momentum for our green belt but here we are and it is actually happening. It feels like people are finally waking up to what is being lost in Calcutt and I am just sitting here staring at the screen in complete disbelief because we truly have something real going now.

I recently moved here to be near the green open spaces and part of the local community. These plans threaten to destroy the equilibrium of both. We must protect our Greenbelt!

There are numerous brown field sites in the Knaresborough and Harrogate area that may be used to home the traveller community if required. Green belt land should not be taken illegally

Forest moor road is 1 mile long and most mornings the traffic already queues from one end to the other the whole village turns into a bottle neck. We do not need any more settlers here whether houses or caravans. The junction at thistle hill has had numerous serious accidents and every day is a lottery whether there will be another one or not...

Green Belt is green belt, don't mess with it please. These sites should not be given full permission.two are actually in the Nidd gorge area, which makes this even the suggestion even more special.

Gypsie sites should be in different locations and spread out so all communities contribute fairly. This latest proposal shows no common sense.

I feel very strongly that we should protect our green belt areas and these sites are far too many when we already have a site for them! it would really spoil the tiny village of Calcutt, this is very unfair.

We shouldn’t be even considering such an ill thought through planning application. Shame on Harrogate Borough Council for trying to force this onto the Calcutt Community.
