Dear Renaissance Reality,

We, the tenants of 92 Morningside, are deeply concerned about the sudden termination of Superintendent Ivan Melo.

Ivan has faithfully served this building since its renovation in 2016. He has consistently been kind, responsive, and attentive to the needs of tenants. He cares deeply for the residents of this building, including our children and pets, and has played a vital role in maintaining a safe, functional, tidy, and welcoming living environment.

Many of us specifically choose to live in this building because it has a full-time, on-site superintendent. Ivan’s presence has provided not only maintenance and emergency support, but also the stability and security essential in a residential community.

We are also deeply troubled that Ivan was informed he had only five days to vacate the basement unit he resides in as part of his employment. This treatment raises concerns about basic fairness, dignity, and compliance with proper employment and housing practices.

We respectfully request the rationale for our superintendent’s termination. Absent that, we urge you to please reverse this decision.

Please treat this matter with the seriousness and humanity it deserves.

We welcome a transparent dialogue and look forward to your prompt response.

Sincerely,

The Tenants of 92 Morningside

I have lived at 92 Morningside Ave. for four years and consider Ivan integral to the community of this building. He protects this building and each of its occupants, which is a priority in selecting a home for my family. I am seriously considering not renewing my lease if he is not reinstated.

Ivan went above and far beyond for us as new tenants with a newborn. From letting us in when locked out to being there within 2 minutes when we had a ceiling leak, we are so grateful!

We don't think management understands the scope of Ivan's role and responsibilities and all that he does for the building and its tenants. Management needs to improve its communication with tenants and show up in the building. They should be asking US for our feedback and working to address any potential issues collaboratively and with transparency. If anything, Ivan does way too much and needs more support.

Ivan’s quick response when a pipe burst in the afternoon likely prevented significant structural damage and potential roof collapse. In a building of this scale, losing someone with that level of experience and knowledge would be a major loss.

Ivan has by far been the most reliable building manager/super I’ve had. He’s always had a very a pleasant attitude from the day I moved in. He has fixed apartment issues promptly and stayed on top of coordination with subcontractors. I’ve had zero negative interactions with Ivan. He works incredibly long hours and takes excellent care of the building.

Yes!! This is just one example of how Ivan has saved management money! Another example is how he is always available to show prospective tenants the building. Many of us would have not rented here if Ivan hadn’t shown us the apartment on day one. He is your realtor, property manager, and your security guard. His constant presence is invaluable. Mark my words, in 18 months, you will have a half vacant building that is falling apart and has terrible security. Nobody wants that. Please don’t ruin this building’s community.

Ivan was the best part of living at 92 Morningside Ave. I moved to NYC alone as a young female student and Ivan went out of his way to make sure I felt safe and was taken care of. Even after moving out of state, Ivan held packages that were wrongly sent to my former address and sent them to me on his own time. Whenever I am asked about my experience living in NYC, I don't talk about the food, or even attending Columbia - I say I had the best super around. If I were still a resident, I would choose not to renew my lease and request to live in whichever building that was lucky enough to have Ivan next. The termination of such an excellent employee is absolutely ludicrous to me.

I feel very strongly about this situation. Ivan has shown up, done the work, and taken care of residents. He should not be wrongfully terminated. This deserves to be addressed and corrected.
