SAVE Ben Fly Road!!!

On Monday, July 26th, 2021, the Hickman County Board of Commissioners held their monthly meeting. On the agenda, known by less than a handful of county residents and taxpayers, was a proposition to close a section of Ben Fly and Frank Mayberry roads at the request of the land owner on the Frank Mayberry end of the proposed section. The request was made due to the county not providing proper maintenance of the road. Luckily the news about the vote leaked on the Sunday just prior to the Monday meeting. On short notice a group of area residents and taxpayers opposed to the proposition voiced their opposition via email and in person at the meeting, and it was voted down. Commissioners were told there was no opposition by the parties requesting the closure and were surprised by the response. So, the road would stay open for now. An email received by one of the persons in opposition from a very unhappy commissioner promised this issue would be revisited later in the year. (See attached email). It is now “later in the year” and time to rally opposition to this proposal.

The closure would be from where Frank Mayberry Rd starts at Beech Valley Rd up to the top of the hill where it changes to Ben Fly Rd. Thus cutting off access between the Primm Springs area to South Lick Creek Rd. This section of road is used by the local community and visitors to the county alike. There is a reasonable amount of traffic on the road even considering the condition of this section. It provides a connection between local communities and serves as an alternate way out for all the residents of Ben Fly Rd if needed for any reason, including emergencies. The dirt roads of Hickman County are an attraction to off road enthusiasts as well. This stretch of road is remote, scenic, and sees its share of jeeps, side by sides and atvs. All of which bring tax dollars to the county when they visit.

As we all know, once a road is closed it will likely never be reopened. That makes these type decisions important as they have a lasting impact on the community. If you are a resident, taxpayer, tourist or dirt road enthusiast of Hickman County, we need your support to keep this road open. A dozen people opposed this the first time around and got it stopped. It will require more the next time this comes up. We are asking you to sign this petition in support of keeping Ben Fly Rd open for all to use. Lending your voice to the community in opposition to this closure and thus requiring the county to repair and maintain this section of road, as they should.

We, the concerned residents and taxpayer of District 5, Hickman County Tennessee, thank you for your support!!!
