After careful review of the “Restore East Fork Rock Creek Campground” petition, we, the silent majority of recreational users among this establishment, feel obligated to address the potential repercussions worthy camp-goers will face if this petition were to succeed, and equally concerning, if it is to fail as it currently stands.

While we might see initial compliance from collective restrictions, there are two main reasons why this strategy should be reconsidered. First, it is morally questionable and second, it is unlikely to guarantee a more positive behavior in the long run.

On a more basic level, it is not fair or reasonable to punish or relinquish the rights of one individual for the actions of another.

Second, there is clear evidence that restrictions are not always effective and punitive responses may increase future problematic behavior.

After careful consideration of this petition we acknowledge there are some favorable requests being made, but we also feel it necessary to highlight some additional “risks” that this petition has failed to consider:

  • Overnight recreational users migrating to higher areas of the canyon and/or neighboring canyons/areas are going to increase dramatically if these restrictions are placed consequently increasing the risks of catastrophic wildfire emanating from illegal campfires and fireworks in those areas
  • ATV use and rubbish (litter) are going to increase dramatically in these neighboring canyons/areas as well
  • The mandate to allow only one road into the designated campsites is counterintuitive to the previous concern of emergency responders being able to service these areas
  • The likelihood of these requests being met is extremely low which could inevitably lead to the full closure of the campground if there are no alternatives which we fear is going to be the ultimate result of this petition as it currently stands

The area of East Fork Rock Creek has long time been the home of many fond memories and experiences for many individuals and families and we intend for that to continue. It is our intent that the requests in this petition be logically revisited and/or revised to more appropriately ensure that full recreational use of this campground remains with the hope and understanding that this is the true intention of the “Restore East Fork Rock Creek Campground” petition.

These signatures represent the worthy camp-goers and full time recreational users of this campground who respect and appreciate all that it has to offer and who oppose the closure of the East Fork campground. We also oppose the misuse of this campground and support feasible solutions that help preserve this environment. Lastly, we encourage all to do your research regarding the campground and what has actually led to its current state so you can make an informed decision about what you feel should be done to rectify the issues at hand.

Updates

June 16, 2021

The feedback regarding the potential closure of the campground reveals a deep concern for the environmental consequences of displacing our recreational community. I am currently organizing these testimonies into a formal presentation for the relevant authorities to ensure our perspective is represented accurately.

This place has been a treasure to so many generations of our family. I sure hope that this push to make it virtually inaccessible to so many does not pass. I, as so many others were raised and practice the "leave it better than you found it" value. I know that in this, we can keep this valuable and beautiful place open to the public without fees and limits. I have hopes that my family and I can continue to go and enjoy God's country freely as he intended. ❤️

I'm signing this petition because I think it's wrong to close any nature area however I see so many comments about out of state people leaving their trash, I'm sure they do, but so do the locals. I've camped up there meny times and cleaned up after 2P, 8B and 1B plates. In my opinion it's not all about the trash, I don't know how many times I've gone up there just to clear my mind and there are local people up there with their trucks tearing up the dirt road to the camp sites creating ruts so deep that I couldn't drive my vehicle through. I agree that something needs to be done but I also agree that closing it down isn't going to be a fix all.

I've made way too many memories here since a child, and plan on continuing this tradition with my kids, and my kids' kids. We have always cleaned up after we are done camping and would clean up other campsites as well if thats what it takes to keep East Fork open.

I grew up out there, and have begun my family. They deserve to have those memories and the place to make them. Just because one or even a few people have mistreated or misused the grounds doesn't speak for or reflect the actions of the many responsible individuals who choose to camp there. Almost any time I've been there I've cleaned up my mess plus some just like my parents taught me. Also if it would help I would even volunteer to go up every other weekend to drive the camp grounds and clean up the area of any debris or garbage.

Been going there my whole life and would hate to see it go do to people who don’t take care of it, and others that want to shut it down because of it. There are things that would help a lot of the problems like garbage cans and bathrooms to use so people aren’t just throwing things and going wherever, keep people from trying to live up there, and fix the roads. Come together and fix this not shut it down like so many other places have.

I am signing this petition to try keep open a place I have gone to since I was a kid. I disagree with closing down the camp ground and feel some measures can be taken to keep the area cleaner and also maintain the cleanliness. There will always be the few who try and ruin it for the many who care. We need places like this to be able to take our families to. Also, the lives stock fieces is what has contaminated the water in the past, not humans. The other petition to close the camp is absurd and not the right approach.
