Petition to Save the County Farm as Greenspace / Park!

Washington County, TN, Commissioners are debating whether or not to sell the County Farm on County Farm Road, Jonesborough, TN. The farm has already been appraised.

By signing this petition, you are letting the Washington County Commissioners know that you oppose selling the County Farm and that you believe this historic property should be preserved as greenspace / park for all of Washington County.

The County Farm is a uniquely valuable property. Its approximately 47 acres of fields, wetlands, and mature hardwood forest are ideal for preservation as greenspace/low-impact park. Rapid development is taking place throughout Washington County, and people want parks for health and recreation. Parks are also economic assets.

The County Farm has a rich history. For over a hundred years, it housed the poor of Washington County. When it closed, it was the last operational county poor farm in Tennessee and one of the last in the US. The property contains an old paupers’ cemetery.

Join our fight to save the County Farm for all Washington County!

Sign this petition to let the Washington County Commissioners know that you oppose selling the County Farm and that the smart choice is preserving the farm for greenspace / park.

To sign this petition, you must be a resident of, or a property owner in, Washington County, TN. This petition is not soliciting funds.

I spent the entire morning walking the edges of the farm and honestly the way the light hits those old trees makes it impossible to think about anything but saving the land. My inbox is full of people sharing their own memories of the property which is just wild because I did not realize how many of you grew up playing near those fields. I am currently trying to get a meeting scheduled with the commissioners but it is like pulling teeth getting anyone to actually talk about what happens next.

The best way to honor the history of the property and the integrity of the land is to preserve this as a green space/low impact park. With substantial residential development on all sides of the property, there is strong potential for use and equally strong need to preserve open green spaces.

There are times when decisions need to made that are far reaching and affect our lives in ways that are not determined by money. The County Farm is one of them for the benefit of all in the county, not just the county budget and the desire to grow the tax base.

Could it be used as a eco-learning environment: Organic farming, wetlands ecosystem, and forest management? Focusing on managing vegetation, restoring ecosystems, reducing hazards, and maintaining forest health.

As our county is being bulldozed right and left, we MUST actively work to preserve greenspace. This historic property embodies the pastoral beauty of East Tennessee and should be preserved for future generations.

Would much rather preserve public greenspace—preserving this historic site and making it available to the public aligns with county needs. For those who want to sell it for housing, I ask would it even be affordable housing? All these new developments being built are priced at $300,000 and up—far beyond the reach of most families in our community.
