Following several near accidents involving children attempting to cross Leeds Road on the way to and from school this road safety campaign aims to: 1. Create a safer route to school for children attending Oatlands School, St Aidans and St John Fisher, and 2. Reduce the speed of traffic travelling between the Leeds Road/Hookstone Road junction and Almsford Bank (traffic leaving Harrogate travelling towards Leeds). The aim is to secure further green man style crossings at the A61 Leeds Road/Leadhall Lane/Hookstone Road junction and improved illuminated signage to reduce the speed of traffic travelling between this junction and Almsford Bank. We are working with Harrogate police, Councillor Fred Willis, council member for Pannal ward and Jill Cooper of Oatlands Junior School. Please add your support below

Updates

October 6, 2009

The feedback from local families reinforces the urgent need to address the traffic hazards on Leeds Road. I am currently coordinating with Councillor Willis to ensure our proposed safety improvements remain a priority for the upcoming council review.

October 6, 2009

The level of public concern regarding the safety of Leeds Road is clearly reflected in the recent surge of support. This collective commitment confirms that our objective of securing safer crossings and improved speed controls is both urgent and widely shared.

Slow down! People treat that stretch like a race track. My daughter walks this way and i worry everyday.

Ridiculous that it takes near misses to get the council to act. Kids are just trying to get to school safely.

About time. That junction is a nightmare even for adults let alone school kids.

Put some speed cameras in. Only way these people will listen.

it is genuinely terrifying watching kids try to cross there during rush hour. someone is going to get seriously hurt if nothing changes soon.
